Velma June Todd of Otsego passed away Saturday morning, April 2, 2022 at Ascension Borgess Hospital.
Velma was born July 22, 1929 in Orangeville, Michigan, the daughter of Ernest and Lois (Sanders) Burd. She was a hard worker beginning at a very young age. Her parents both worked and, as the eldest child, she filled in as mother to her five younger brothers. She began working at the Five and Dime at only 14 years old. Velma graduated from Otsego High School in 1948. On June 10, 1950 she married Mark LaRue Todd in Otsego. Velma was employed by Checker Motor Cabs, working on the assembly line and as a painter for 40 years. She was very industrious, working full time and raising her family. Velma processed and canned many of the vegetables grown in her garden, she was a great cook and her family never went hungry. She made the best Banana Pudding and her chocolate chip cookies never lasted long, even when she tried to hide them from her adoring children. She loved spending time at the lake, sun bathing, watching the water, and teaching her children how to swim. She enjoyed reading, antiquing, and adding to her collectables. She was a member of the Church of God in Otsego. Velma’s greatest joy was her family.
Survivors include her children, Patricia (Larry) Spitzner of Otsego, Kenneth (Sylvia) Todd of Otsego, Keith (Deb) Todd of Otsego, Ronald Todd (Chris Eskelinen) of Tampa, Lois Zimmerman of Otsego and Karen (Jon) Bush of Newaygo; 14 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren and brothers, Jerry (Cheryl) Burd of Otsego and Richard (Jeanne) Burd of Ocala, Florida. She was preceded in death by her parents Ernest and Lois Burd, her husband Mark, brothers, Robert, William and Melvin, grandsons, Shaun Todd and Kenneth Baker and her nephew Michael Burd.
Friends may meet with Velma’s family beginning at 10:00 am on Friday April 8, 2022 at Winkel Funeral Home in Otsego until the time of services at 11:00 am on Friday. Reverend Stephen Burrow officiating.
Burial will follow at Mountain Home Cemetery.

I am so sorry Lois and family, my prayers are with you. I will always remember our trip to Florida, when we stopped at a gas station everyone flew out of the vehicle saying there was a mouse in the van, we started taking everything out of the van, luggage, pillows, blankets, all of a sudden Velma started laughing and telling us to stop, she made the whole thing up. Velma was funny and very loving and she surely will be missed.

I am so sorry to hear of Velma’s passing. While not directly related (my uncle Bill was her brother-in-law), our families all knew each other. Enjoyed talking with her a couple of years ago at my aunt’s funeral. I always thought very highly of her. Prayers of comfort for the family.
