James E.  VanLent

James VanLent of Alamo Township passed away Thursday, October 2, 2014 at Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo.

Mr. VanLent was born August 5, 1932 in Otsego, the son of Eldon and Marie (Brown) VanLent. For more than 31 years Jim was a police officer and fireman for the city of Plainwell. He was a member of the 12th Street Baptist Church and in his spare time enjoyed golfing. In 1950 he married Shirley Nichols in Indiana.

Surviving are his wife, Shirley; his sons, Jim (Terry) VanLent of Plainwell and Dan VanLent of Otsego; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; his sisters, Sandra (Ron) MacVean of Martin and Sharon VanLent of Plainwell; along with several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Eldon.

Friends may meet with Jim’s family Monday, October 6, 2014 from 2-4 P.M. and 6-8 P.M. at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego. Cremation will follow.  A Memorial Service will be held Tuesday, October 7, 2014 at 11:00 A.M. at the 12th Street Baptist Church in Kalamazoo, Pastor Thad Stout officiating. Due to construction, please take 11th St. south to ON Avenue, then north onto 12th Street.

Kyle Anderson


Kyle L. Anderson of Plainwell passed away Saturday, April 19, 2014 in Alamo.Mr. Anderson was born July 5, 1941 at the family home in Gun Plain Township to Roy and Jacqueline (Morris) Anderson, both now deceased. Kyle graduated from Martin Rural Agriculture School in 1959. For 36 years he was employed at the Plainwell Paper Mill until the very last day of its existence in April of 2001.

He enjoyed his home and loved watching sports, movies and history channels. He also loved to watch poker programs and played poker with many family and friends. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and friends. When he was young he loved the out of doors and was a successful hunter, then enjoyed passing those skills on to his younger grandchildren, who because of him have been very successful.Kyle was a member of the Portage/Schoolcraft Eagles, American Legion of Schoolcraft and the 12th Street Baptist Church.

On September 15, 1984, in their home, he married the love of his life and best friend, Lynn, who survives. Together they blended a family of six children, Mark Kyle (Donita) Anderson of Texas, Deborah Lee Simpson of Kalamazoo, Dawnl Lynn (Mark) Israels of Portage, Bryen Howard (Brandy) Pion of Martin and deceased son, Craig Eliot. They also have a daughter, Barbara. There are 15 grandchildren, Cherie, Kenneth, Christopher, Savanah, Derek, Adam, Bryce, Bethany, Emily, Nikki, Roy Jr., Melanie, Ashley, Andrew and Amanda; many many ‘adopted’ grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; brothers, Richard Lee (Lloyal) Anderson of Colorado and David Allen (Linda) Anderson of Nevada. He also left behind to cherish his memory his two four-legged sons, SkipE and Tyty.

Friends may visit with Kyle’s family from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 P.M Wednesday, April 23, 2014, at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M. Thursday, April 24, 2014, at 12th Street Baptist Church, Pastor Thaddeus Stout officiating. Private burial will be at East Martin Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Kyle may be made to the 12th Street Baptist Church or Disabled American Veterans.

Irene Ciesielski

Irene Ciesielski

Irene June Ciesielski of Plainwell, Michigan passed away Sunday, March 16, 2014 at Life Care Center of Plainwell. She was born June 3, 1928 in Kalamazoo, MI to Albert and Elizabeth (Vermulen) Nuyen. Irene graduated from Plainwell High School in 1947. In 1955 she was married to Floyd “Pete” Ciesielski and they enjoyed life together until Pete’s death in 1976. Irene worked for Michigan Bell Telephone for 17 years, retiring in 1974. Following her retirement she worked for the DNR field office in Plainwell for several years then as an office manager for KalPak Inc. for 14 years, retiring in 1993. She loved golfing, fishing and bowling and was an active member of 12th St. Baptist Church.

Surviving are her son, Michael “Mick” Ciesielski of Mattawan; her granddaughter, Aimee Lee (Brad Herrington) Fultz of Plainwell; great-grandchildren, Alex and Emma Herrington and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Pete in 1976; her son Dennis in 1994 and by her siblings, Hermina, Kathryn, Albert Jr., William and Bertha.

Friends may meet with her family from 11 A.M. Wednesday, March 19, 2014, at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego, until the time of the funeral service at 12 noon with Pastor Thaddeus Stout officiating. Burial will follow at Hillside Cemetery, Plainwell.

Darrel J. Allen

Darrel J. Allen

 Darrel J. Allen age 75 of Otsego, got his promotion to glory on Sunday, February 16, 2014, at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo. Darrel was born July 25, 1938 in Marenisco, MI to Clarence and Grace (Cox) Allen and had been a lifelong resident of this area.

He was employed as a DNR officer with the State of Michigan for 30 years until his retirement.  He was a mentor to many young men, had been a member of the Plainwell Rotary, and had been active with the 12th Street Baptist Church of Kalamazoo and with Plainwell Baptist Church, Darrel was a member of First Baptist Church of Allegan. In his leisure time he enjoyed hunting, gardening, cooking and shelling on the beach in Florida. He loved his dog Charlie Brown but most of all he loved his family.

 On December 20, 1958 in Plainwell he married Barbara Johnson, who died in 2008. Also preceding him in death were his parents; his great-grand daughter, Natalie Allen; and his siblings Charles, Clarence Jr. and Arlove Pete.

Surviving are his son, Tim Allen and his companion Theresa Dibble of Plainwell and daughter –in-law Diane Allen of Hopkins; his son, Todd (Janet) Allen also of Plainwell; four grandchildren, Ryan (Heidi) Allen, Leanne (Cory) LaFountain, Kelli (Josh) Smith and William (Angela) Allen; seven great-grandchildren, Dominik, Logan, Hunter, McKenzi, Lilly, Julianne and Mason; his sisters, Darlean Day and Florence Baker; and several nieces and nephews.

Friends may visit with his family at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego from 6 to 8 P.M. Wednesday, February 19, 2014, and on Thursday, February 20, 2014, at the 12th Street Baptist Church in Kalamazoo from noon until the time of service at 1:00 P.M. with Pastor Don Boss officiating. Burial will take place at Hillside Cemetery in Plainwell on a later date.
