Bill passed away Wednesday, May 22, 2024, at Beacon Point in Richland. 

He was born September 1, 1930, in Kalamazoo the son of William and Trena (Meninga) Spencer. Bill proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force. As a young man he worked for his parents as a butcher at Spencer’s Grocery and later as a technician at Checker Motors in Kalamazoo for 49 years until his retirement. 

Bill was a hobby farmer and enjoyed raising beef cattle. He had many skills including woodworking, welding, metal fabrication and automotive upholstery. He liked staying busy by fixing and building things for many people including his family. 

Bill was a member of the Otsego American Legion and a lifelong member of the Otsego United Methodist Church where he, along with Joyce taught Sunday School for many years. In 1954 in Kalamazoo, he married Joyce Thayer. They spent 69 wonderful years together until her passing in February of this year. 

Surviving are his children, Dave (Ingrid) Spencer of Otsego and Don (Lisa) Spencer of Grand Rapids; grandchildren, Nolan (Mila) Spencer of Grand Rapids, Brittany (Daniel Boutte) Spencer of Tennessee and Max (Ashley) Spencer of Oregon; 3 great-grandchildren, Odin, London and Madelyn; sister, Marcia Spencer Cairns along with many nieces and nephews. 

Bill was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Joyce and his siblings, Robert Spencer and Margaret Dugan. 

According to his wishes cremation has taken place. 

Friends may visit with Bill’s family starting at 1:00 P.M., Saturday, June 1, 2024, at the Otsego United Methodist Church, until the time of the memorial service at 2:00 P.M., with Pastor Joe Shaler officiating. 

Private family burial of ashes will take place at Fort Custer National Cemetery at a later time.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Bill may be made to Christian Neighbors or the charity of your choice.
