William Lyle Herrington of Otsego, Michigan, died
Saturday March 22, 2008
in Plainwell. Mr. Herrington was born
October 23, 1919
in
Kalamazoo
to John and Alma (Burgland) Herrington. He attended
Kalamazoo
Central
High School
. During WWII he proudly served his country in the United States Navy. During the battle of
Guadalcanal
he directed the forward guns of the USS San Francisco, which was the only cruiser in US Naval history to defeat a Japanese battleship. He also served on the USS Phoenix and the USS Bull. Bill also served
during the Korean War. For many years he was employed with Ruud, Rheem, Essex and retired from Steketee’s in 1983. He was very inventive and could repair anything. Bill enjoyed fishing and playing Canasta. He was talented musically and played the harmonica, accordion and guitar. On

, he married Doris Landes, who survives. Also surviving are two sons, William Carl (Sharon) Herrington of Avon, Illinois, and Robert Alan (Michele) Herrington of Kalamazoo; 9 grandchildren, William E. (Stephanie), Alex (Emily), Elizabeth (James) Benge, John (Sara), Darran, Gregory, David, Austin, and Tyler; 5 great-grandsons, Benjamin, Timothy, Cody, Levi and Phisher; and a great-granddaughter soon to be born; 3 sisters-in-law, Lucille Herrington of Salem, OR , Hazel Cassell of Mattawan, Merle (Maynard) Knight of Plainwell; many nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were 3 brothers and 2 sisters, Karl, John, Leo, Ruth and Clara. Cremation has taken place. A Memorial Service will be held Thursday at
11:00 A.M.
at
Winkel Funeral Home,
Otsego,
Pastor Bill Walker officiating. Military Honors will be conducted by V.F.W. Post #3030. Burial of ashes at
Fort
Custer
National
Cemetery
,
Augusta
, will be held at a later date. Contributions in memory of Bill may be made to In-House Hospice Solutions.
