Richard "Dick" Oatmen, a beloved long-time businessman in Wayland, passed away peacefully at his home on July 1, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. Born on February 25, 1934, in Grand Rapids, the son of James and Irma (Slaby) Oatmen. Dick was a beloved long-time business owner in Wayland and dedicated his life to serving his community through his businesses, Wayland Motor Sales and the Standard Station.

Before embarking on his successful business career, Dick proudly served his country in the U.S. Army, showcasing his commitment and dedication to the nation. His contributions extended beyond the military as he fostered relationships and built connections within the community throughout his lifetime.

Dick had a deep passion for gardening, loved hunting, especially out west, and was a devoted fan of the Detroit Lions. These interests were a testament to his adventurous spirit and love for the great outdoors, which he cherished throughout his life. Dick was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Wayland.

He leaves behind his beloved wife of 71 years, Marilyn, and their children: Judy Kilmartin of Caledonia, Julie (Tom) Reurink of Wayland, and Nick Oatmen of Wayland; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; his sister, Diane Cowels, along with many nieces and nephews.

Dick is preceded in death by his parents, a granddaughter, Jamie Reurink, his son-in-law, Michael Kilmartin, and siblings Gerald Oatmen, Darlene Lapekes, Joanne Graczyk, and Juliet Pierce.

According to his wishes cremation has taken place.

Friends may visit with Dick's family starting at 10:00 A.M., Wednesday, July 9, 2025, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Wayland, until the time of the memorial service at 11:00 A.M., with Pastor Rick Scheibe officiating. 

Private family burial of ashes will take place at Elmwood Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Dick may be directed to Faith Hospice or Trinity Lutheran Church.
