Reverend Gordon L. Greene

Reverend Gordon L. Greene, beloved priest, educator, brother, uncle, and cherished friend, entered eternal life on July 28, 2026, at Beacon Health in Kalamazoo. Born on November 27, 1946, in Allegan, he was the son of Llewellyn and Alma (Doublestien) Greene, and from a young age demonstrated a deep care for others and a boundless curiosity about the world.

Fr. Greene’s commitment to education and service was evident throughout his life. A proud graduate of Otsego High School, class of 1964, Gordon continued his academic journey at Western Michigan University, graduating in 1977 with a Bachelor of Science and Master’s in Education. His passion for spiritual and intellectual growth led him to study at the University of Dayton and the University of Notre Dame, culminating in a Master of Divinity from Sacred Heart School of Theology.

Before discerning his call to the priesthood, Gordon dedicated himself to shaping young minds and nurturing their talents, serving as a teacher, athletic director, and principal at St. Margaret Catholic School, principal at St. Mary of Assumption School in Bronson, and later at St. John School in Albion. His integrity, wisdom, and genuine care touched the lives of countless students, parents, and colleagues.

On June 11, 1994, Gordon was ordained to the priesthood at St. Augustine Cathedral in Kalamazoo, a momentous and joyous occasion that marked the beginning of two decades of faithful pastoral ministry. He served the Diocese of Kalamazoo from 1994 until 2014, ministering with compassion and steadfast devotion. He was most recently the pastor at St. Margaret Catholic Church in Otsego, where his kind presence, empathetic counsel, and quiet strength were a source of comfort to parishioners and fellow clergy alike.

Fr. Greene lived his faith through action, both in and beyond the parish walls. He was an enthusiastic member of the St. Margaret Parish Knights of Columbus, always ready to lend a helping hand and foster community. His love for people was unparalleled; whether tending to his beloved garden, sharing stories and laughter over lunch with fellow priests and friends, especially at Judy’s Restaurant in Otsego or doting on his cherished cats. Fr. Greene embraced life’s simple joys with deep gratitude.

Surviving are his siblings, Luella Wagner and Roger (Mert) Greene; treasured nieces and nephews, Laura (Carl Hicks) Winsborrow, Anjie (Robert) Kokan, Barb (Thomas) Wright, Patty (Dan) Heintzelman, Richard (Adele) Greene and Luke (Christy) Greene; great-nieces and great-nephews, Cody, Tyler, Melody, Logan, Annetta, Brindley, Daton, Macayla, Tasia, Christian, Cameron and Morgan along with several great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and great-niece, April.

Those who knew Fr. Greene will remember his unwavering faith, generosity of spirit, and profound commitment to the people he served. His warmth, sense of humor, and passion for nurturing both the minds and souls of those around him will be dearly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

In this time of mourning and reflection, the family takes comfort in the lasting impact Reverend Gordon L. Greene has had on his community and the many lives he touched. May he rest in peace, and may his memory inspire continued kindness and faith.

Friends may visit with Fr. Greene’s family from 2-4PM and 5-7PM, Sunday, August 9, 2026, with a prayer service at 6:30P.M., at the Winkel Funeral Home in Otsego. 

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 A.M., Monday, August 10, 2026, at St. Margaret Catholic Church in Otsego, with Bishop Edward Lohse officiating. 

Burial will follow at St. Margaret Cemetery, Otsego.
