Mary J. Riley, a devoted mother and loving wife, passed away peacefully on March 28, 2026, at Intersect Healthcare in Greenville. Born on October 13, 1956, in Allegan, she was the daughter of Carl and Jean (Oisten) VanNess.
Mary graduated from Otsego High School in 1975 before beginning her career at Barker & Sons. It was there she met her first husband, Charles Austin, whom she married in 1983. Mary’s dedication to service continued as she became a beloved bus driver for Plainwell Public Schools, where she drove the “dog” bus for over 20 years until her retirement. Known for her kindness and warmth, she was deeply proud of her family and attentive to the children she cared for on her route, demonstrating a firm but fair approach when necessary.
In July 2011, Mary married David Riley. Together, they made their home in Sidney, where she found joy in her favorite pastimes. Mary was an avid collector of Snowbabies vintage globes, enjoyed camping adventures, trips to the casino, and bird watching, all of which brought her immense happiness.
Mary’s family was the center of her life. She is survived by her husband, David Riley; son Jeremiah Austin and his wife Amanda of Hastings; grandchildren Ella, Sarah, Lilly, Colton, and Megan; stepsons Joseph and Brian Riley; her brother Melvin VanNess along with several nieces and nephews
She was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband Charles, and an infant sister.
According to her wishes cremation has taken place.
