Mark A. Mcmillin

Mark Allan McMillin (Papa, Mac, Coach Mac) age 70, passed away unexpectedly Monday, June 4, 2018 on the golf course of a heart attack.

Mark was born December 31, 1947 in West Plains, MO to Ruth and William McMillin.  He graduated from Swartz Creek High School where he was an All-State baseball player, and talented musician.

Mark served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War where he was awarded the Purple Heart, Silver Star, and Bronze Medal.  Mark taught and coached for 36 years at Otsego High School.

His greatest joys came from his wife Laura and four children and eleven grandchildren:  Samantha and Danny Sturman (Josie and CJ Jackson, Brent and Abbie Sturman), Pollie and Mike Gilchrist (Skyler, Kate, and Ryann Gilchrist), Jason McMillin and Christina Kunick (Jonah Pfau and Clara McMillin), and Pennie and Doug Start (Evan McMillin, Drew, and Cooper Start).

You could always find Mark at his grand-children’s sporting events and activities cheering them on the sidelines or helping announce in the press box. He loved fishing, golf, and horse-shoes down south in the winter-time.

Mark had a never ending positive spirit and energy around everyone he encountered.  A true role model of a kind hearted person; always loving, supportive and present.

He is survived by his loving wife, children, grandchildren, extended family, and many close friends that had a special place in his heart.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Ruth and William McMillin, sister, Billy Sue Atherton and brother, Curt McMillin.

According to his wishes cremation has taken place.

Friends my visit with Mark’s family from 6:00-8:00 P.M., Thursday, June 7, 2018 at the  Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego.

A Memorial and Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 A.M., Friday, June 8, 2018 at the Lynx Golf Course in Otsego.

For a lasting memory, donations in Mark’s name can be made to Wings of Hope Hospice, 530 Linn Street, Allegan, MI 49010.

Beautiful Celebration of Life Ceramony. The setting the speakers and food were all wonderful. Mark was a special person and it is nice to know that everyone could see what a positive source of energy he conveyed. Having been coached by Mark in football for 4 years was a great honor and being a lineman I got to spend a lot of time with him. Mark was a very positive person but there were a few times when a bunch of teenage football players could drive even him to the brink and sometimes a little past it. You could always tell when he was at the limits of his patience. There were several stages to his release of frustration. Stage one was the turning and tilting of the baseball cap. This let you know that he meant business. In stage two he would squint his eyes and pucker and tilt his jaw a little bit. Stage 3 would be the verbal barage of how he could not understand how we could not grasp the concepts he was trying to convey to us or how disappointed he was at the lack of physicality in which we were performing a task. The final stage would be him performing some physical feat of strength. This could be a simple as demonstrating the throwing of a block, but might have him actually throwing Scott Merrit over his shoulder and running a 50 yard dash with a 200 pound kid on his shoulder just to prove it could be done. Of course no one could push Coach’s buttons better than Ron “Sharky” Wolthuis, God Bless His Soul. I’m sure Ron is up there right now getting a rise out of Mark. And I am sure Mark is up in Heaven, rounding up a posse of characters to spread love and understanding, and fighting for all that is right, just as he has always done. God Bless.
