Lucian Keith Marks

Lucian, age 94, passed away peacefully on October 27, 2021 in Allegan, Michigan. A longtime resident of Southwest Michigan, Lucian enjoyed a full and rewarding life of service including time in the United States Navy during World War II, more than 60 years with the Masonic Lodge, and over 20 years as a Shrine Clown.

LUMA, as he was known by his fellow clowns, was never at a loss for a story or magic trick to entertain people of all ages. A devote Christian and member of the First Congregational Church of Otsego, Lucian cherished his time helping others in need; often providing groceries to Christian Neighbors or transportation for patients of the Shrine Hospital. Known for his positive outlook on life, when asked how he was doing, the reply was always the same – “Wonderful!” He will always be remembered for his quick wit, passion of travel, and love of life.

Lucian is survived by his wife Shirley Brainard; daughter Pamela (Donald) DeVisser of Kona, Hawaii; son Rex (Leslie) Marks of McKinney, Texas; stepson Harry (Cindy) Brainard of Otsego; stepdaughters Patricia (Robert) Shaefer of Golden Valley, Arizona; Carleen White of Plainwell and Judy Matthews of Otsego as well as fifteen grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren, and many friends.

Donations in memory of Lucian may be made to

I always remember Lucien being around as a child. He was a brother to my Uncle Don. He was always upbeat when you met him anywhere. He will be missed. He was a special person. Condolences to the family.

It has been our honor to know Lucian and Shirley. We loved Lucian’s sense of humor and stories. When Lucian asked Rich if he wanted a brownie, he handed Rich a paper Brown- B, that Rich still has!. Everyone loved Lucian and our thoughts and prayers for comfort goes out to the whole family.

When I think of a great husband for my mom, Shirley, I always hoped she would meet someone who was kind & loving, generous & fun with a great sense of humor. She is such a kind spirit herself & she & Lucian were great together. Lucian was all of those things & he & mom had a great time together. They handled a lot of rough times together & did it with faith & grace.

We will miss the inside jokes we had with Lucian….as time goes by we will know just how special he was & how many ways he touched our lives. Mom is a woman who knows how much love & faith has changed her world & she will be OK.

Death is a part of our process on Earth & we think of it, not with sadness but a loving transition. We loved Lucian & we still do. Blessings to everyone who knew him & loved him….Bob & Pat Shaefer

Lucian was great for the short time I knew him. I had the privilege of taking care of him in his last days here on earth. I loved his tricks that he showed me and one of the tricks I tried doing myself and still to this day cannot get the trick down. You will be missed by many.

To Shirley and Lucian’s family, Dan and I are so very sorry to hear of Lucian’s passing. Dan and I both want to extend out deepest and most sincere sympathy to the entire family. Lucian was always a joy to be around. And always had a trick to show the waitresses or waiters when we did go out for dinner. I especially loved his trick about the flying cloth. Dan enjoyed coming to see you both and having our pie and coffee.. We are so grateful that Shirley had found someone that enjoyed doing all that she loved to do. Only thing I don’t think he cared much for is camping, but he made up for that by them traveling all over the country and seeing so many things that Shirley loved to see. They have had a wonderful life together and he has been so good to a very good friend of mine. We love you Shirley and you can rest assured that because of Lucian’s faith that he is Resting in Peace. Lucian was a very kind spirit. And he will be dearly missed.

Lucian was always such a positive person and never lacked for a joke to tell. I will never forget the card he kept in his wallet that was his “Pride and Joy”. I worked many years with him at Western Michigan University and he will be missed.

The world shines a little less brightly. Lucian, you will be missed. One of my many recollections – Lucian showing me a picture of his Pride and Joy. Rest with the angels.
