James P. Leonard, also known as Jim, passed into eternity, on January 11, 2024, in his hometown of Otsego. He was born on March 4, 1937, the son of James and Irene (Calvin) Leonard. Jim graduated from Otsego High School in 1955. He had a fulfilling career working for Parker Hannifin for 37 years as a tool and die maker until his retirement.
He had a natural inclination towards mechanics and enjoyed being a race car driver at Kalamazoo Speedway and Berlin Speedway. His love for racing extended to helping his sons and grandsons build and race stock cars. Additionally, Jim cherished spending quality time with his wife, taking drives together in their beloved '69 Camaro convertible.
Traveling was another interest that brought joy to Jim's life. He explored various destinations including Israel, Hawaii, the east coast, and the Smoky Mountains. The winters were particularly special to him as he enjoyed spending time in Bradenton, FL where he immersed himself in playing shuffleboard and checkers. On October 20, 1974, in Cooper Township, he married Janice Smith who passed away in 2021.
Jim leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories with his surviving family members: sons Mike (Julie) Leonard of Allegan and Randy (Annette) Leonard of Kalamazoo; step-children Deb (Dennis) Merlau of Delton, Sherri (Joe) Fountain of Shelbyville, and Larry (Joyce) Zuiderveen of Otsego; grandchildren, Abby, Lisa, Nichole, Jimmy, David, Emily, Lindsey, Tony, Amy, Draven, Denise, Daniel, Diana, Dustin, Benjamin, Jonathan, Melissa, James, Jacob, Josiah and Joel who may remember he always said "I buy my friends, they are the best kind." ; several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Carolyn (Andy) Sparks and Patricia Clingenpeel and several nephews also survive him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, loving wife of 47 years, Janice and daughter, Sue Ann Currie.
Friends may meet with Jim's family starting at 10:00 A.M., on Tuesday, January 16, 2024, at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego, until the time of the funeral service at 11:00 A.M., with Pastor Paul Laborde officiating.
Burial will follow at West Cooper Cemetery in Cooper Township at a later time.
Jim will be dearly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His dedication to his career, love for racing, and zest for life will continue to inspire those he leaves behind.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Jim may be made to Right to Life of West Michigan.
