Eugene G. Roberts

Eugene (Gene) passed away at his home peacefully with family by his side on Friday, April 10, 2020. He was born in Plainwell, Mi. on July 14th 1933. The son of the late Charles and Irene (Cutcher) Roberts. Gene proudly served as a US Army Staff Sergeant in the Korean War with the 7th ID Scout/Recon Unit and was awarded his Combat Infantryman Badge. He was also a Life Member of Fidelity Masonic Lodge 513 in Otsego.

Gene had a lifelong passion for family, woodworking, hunting and Martin football games. His grandkids thought his name was Damnit Gene, until they got older and realized that was just what Grandma called him. They would each eventually call him Papa.

He was preceded in death by his brothers Anthony (1965), Jack (1977), sister Sarah Newnum (2000), and daughter Bobbie Jo (1990). Surviving is Gene’s wife of 65 years Marcia (Banks) Roberts of Plainwell, Mi. Their children are Shelly (David) Lafountain, Sheryl (Gordy) Roberts, George (Dan) (Kim) Roberts, and Toni (Steve) Allen. Gene and Marcia have twenty four grandchildren, thirty great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

According to his wishes cremation has taken place.

Due to current restrictions, a memorial service will be held at a later date.

In-lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to

We lived down the road from them in Hooper. I babysat for them and then later worked with Shelly. Keep the good memories and the happy times you had with him close.

We had the pleasure of meeting Gene a few years ago at a family reunion. This was the first time that Tony got to meet him. The first impression of him was that he was such a very knowledgeable and gentle man. To listen to some of the stories he told was amazing. He will surely be missed and our condolences go to his wife Marcia and the whole family. May he rest in peace and soar high above the mountains keeping an eye out for us here down below. Til we meet again!!

Marcia and family,

So sorry to see that we’ve lost Gene (Tom Fox as he called himself to Ron). We have such great memories of times with you and Gene.

We have thought of you so many times over the years that slip by so quickly. By the sounds you’ve had a full life together. So many grandchildren and great grandchildren. I hope they all have a good deal of Gene in them as he was such a great guy and a good friend.

65 years together. It’s going to be so hard for you now. that’s like losing your right arm.

Take care of yourself. Sending our love to you and the family.

Thank you gene and I talk about you both quite often, the memories that we have. It’s a great loss but we don’t want him to go through what he went through. Thank you for your thoughts.

We are so sorry for your loss. I know that he was a wonderful role model for his grandsons. Dustin is our son-inlaw and he always spoke fondly with great respect for his Grandpa Roberts. Although we did not get many chances to see and speak with him we will remeber him fondly and his sense of humor. Your family is in our prayers.

Sorry for the loss of your father. Jack worked with your dad at Windemuller for several years. It is difficult losing a parent. Rejoice in the memories as they stay with you throughout your life. May God bless you and your family during this grieving process.

Marcia and Family: I am so sorry to read of Gene’s passing. I’m sorry I didn’t really get to know Gene, just saw him at class reunions or in the grocery store. I’m sure you and the Family have a lot of wonderful memories to cherish. Embrace the Family with those memories! Gene is at peace now with God by his side.
