Darlene was a great lady. I had the pleasure of working with her at Gertsen Trucking. She always had to listen and help when you needed her. She spoke constantly about her step-daughters. May she rest in peace.

I’m so saddened by this news. Dar always greeted me with a hug and smile in my adult years and although I only saw her maybe once a year now, she will be missed!

My heart aches and tears flow knowing that you aren’t here anymore. You were such a pillar of goodness and kindness. Thank you for being McKenzie’s bonus Mom aka “Momma Dar”; you helped shaped her into a strong and thought girl that she is today. Until we meet again, RIP “Momma Dar”.

Fresh out of college I was hired to teach 3rd grade in Otsego in 1973 at Allegan Street Elementary School. My room was located on the playground side, and I was busy working to set things up in August. My windows were open and a cute little girl rode up on her bike, stuck her head in the window and started talking. “Was I Mr. Gilmer?” she asked . She told me she would be in my class, introduced herself, offered to help me, and came in to do so. Pretty much every day I was working before school started she showed up and helped out. That little girl was Darlene, and she would become the first Otsego student I ever met during my 32 year teaching career in Otsego. She was kind, she was funny, and she was enthusiastic. We had a good year together, and the memory of those first meetings are very good. I am sorry to read that she passed away so young. My sympathies to the family.

The obit didn’t mention but she also worked at Burnham & Flower for almost two years, while still working at the trucking company. I don’t know how she ever got any sleep. She was a great person to work with and will be missed greatly. We had fun finding new connections in our small world like the fact that my Aunt Deb was her cousin. And that my cousins new daughter in law was related to Darlene also. My condolences to all of her family and friends.

So very sad to hear this news about my cousin Darlene. Wishing her siblings and immediate family my condolences. I remember sewing Barbie doll clothes for Darlene when I babysat for her many, many years ago.
