Charles Douglas Elkins, lovingly known as Doug, passed away peacefully, Saturday, March 14, 2026, at his home in Otsego, surrounded by his family.
He was born in Charleston, West Virigina, on July 10, 1939, the son of Russell and Bertha (Anderson) Elkins. Doug worked as a crane operator installing metal power towers and did concrete fabrication. There wasn’t a piece of heavy equipment he couldn’t drive, if it had keys he could drive it.
Doug’s family was his greatest pride and joy. He loved spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Doug liked playing horseshoes with his brothers, was a momma’s boy who would do anything for his mother and had a nickname for everyone. He also found joy in playing cards, watching Westerns and wrestling, fishing and feeding the squirrels and birds. Known for his green thumb he loved caring for his many plants and flowers. Doug enjoyed his neighbors who treated him like family. In October of 1959 he married Rachel Risner who passed away in 1981. He went on to marry Norma and Pam who both preceded him in death.
Surviving are his children, Sherri Elkins, Roy (Jessica) Elkins, Susan (Tony) Christopher and Darby (Clifford) Robinson; daughter-in-law, Kathi Snyder; 18 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; siblings, Danny (Norma) Elkins, Jerry (Barb) Elkins, Johnny (Colleen) Elkins, Jim (Loretta) Elkins, Ricky (Kathy) Elkins, Pete (Rose) Elkins and Jackie (Ed) Blankenship; sisters-in-law, Jane Elkins, Sandy Elkins, Janet Elkins, Brenda Loviska, Garnet Blauvelt and Lorene Sizemore along with several nieces and nephews including his special nephew., Bobby Elkins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wives; son, Gilbert Snyder; grandson, Evan Elkins; great-grandson, Harrison Rain Merrill; siblings, Buddy Elkins, Ruth (Daniel) Money, Barb Elkins, Phyllis (Virgil) Buell, Kenny Elkins, Cob Elkins and Roger Dale Elkins; mother and father-in-law, Ben and Osie Risner; brothers and sisters-in law, Venus (Freddy) Marshal, Elenore (Russ) Bacon, Edizene (Gordon) Heffner, Josephine (General) Noble, Cotton Blauvelt, Dorthy (Everett) McEntyre, Darlene (Floyd) Hatfield; Steve Risner and Jack Sizemore who was like a brother; special niece, Cheryl Elkins and special nephew, Jeff Sizemore.
Friends may meet with Doug’s family starting at 11:00 A.M., Tuesday, March 17, 2026, at the Orangeville Pentecostal Church, until the time of the funeral service at 1:00 P.M., with Pastors Mike Risner, Richard Sheldon and Jim Hall officiating.
Burial will follow at Oakhill Cemetery in Orangeville.
