Carroll L. Commans

Carroll passed away Sunday, July 26, 2026, at Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo. 

He was born on January 12, 1940, in Allegan the son of Lawrence and Lulu (Navis) Commans. Carroll graduated from Allegan High School in 1957. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army. He began working at J.C. Penney before starting Carroll Commans Builders in Martin, which he operated for 30 years, until his retirement in 1989. Carroll was also a building inspector in Watson Township for several years. 

After retirement he moved to Florida where he continued to work as a construction superintendent and later operated a lawn care business in both Crystal River and Citrus Springs. Eventually Carroll moved back to the area in May of 2024. 

In his free time Carroll enjoyed being outdoors, hunting and fishing. He was an avid reader who enjoyed history. He was a devoted fan of the Tampa Bay Rays and the Detroit Tigers. As a younger man Carroll liked playing the organ and accordion. Carroll loved every opportunity he had to cut a rug with his beloved dance partner, Claudia. He was a member of the American Legion Post 166 and the AMVETS Post 447. Carroll had a kind heart with a smile for everyone. He was outgoing and quick to make friends. On August 31, 1979, he married Claudia Sherman who survives. 

Also surviving are his children, Patti Owens, Mike (Tiffany) Owens, Dan (Teresa) Owens, Valerie Ann (John) Commans Fleming and Melissa Arlene (Mike) Paquette; his adored grandchildren, Zachary, Ty, Amy, Cassidy, Matthew, Dustin, Carroll Brock, Candace, Camron, Taya, Abby, Emma, Garrett, Sara, Katie and Joe; great-grandchildren, Madalyn, Lilly, Aleia. Lydia, Mikey, Ali, EJ, Addy, Ella, Winry, Brooks, Levi, Delaney, Grayson, Archer, Kamden, Jameson, Beckham and another due soon; brother Dale (Pat) Commans and niece, Ilene. 

He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Karen Hieserich. 

According to his wishes cremation has taken place. Burial of ashes will take place at Fort Custer National Cemetery at a later time.
