Carl Holland

Carl was a devoted Christian, beloved husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather who went peacefully to be with his Lord and Savior Wednesday morning, June 13, 2018.

Carl was born May 26, 1919 in Kalamazoo to Everett and Cora (Deurloo) Holland. He grew up and learned the lessons of hard work in his father’s dairy. He attended Otsego Public Schools and believed himself to be the last of the Otsego Class of 1937. Carl owned Holland’s Dairy and retired from the Eaton Corporation in Kalamazoo in 1980. He completed a course at the Grand Rapids Baptist Bible College and a 5 year Moody Bible Institute Correspondence Course. He continued to study theology and prayed daily for his family. Carl was baptized at 9 years old at the Otsego Baptist Church and remained a member his whole life. On October 10, 1942 he married Kathleen Fuller at the Plainwell Baptist Church. They were married nearly 70 years, she preceded him in death on December 12, 2011.Carl enjoyed traveling extensively with his wife. Their destinations included Hawaii, Canadian National Parks and the Holy Land. He was an avid fan of his children’s sporting events at the high school and college level. Carl enjoyed weight lifting, tennis, golf, and sailing on Lake Michigan and the Gulf of Mexico off Florida. Although playing the accordion brought him much joy, his greatest joy was his study of the scriptures and his love for the Lord.

Survivors include his children, David (Sandy) Holland of Oshtemo, Daniel (Lynn) Holland of Austin, Texas, Donald (Cherie) Holland of Portage, Dale (Patricia) Holland of Plainwell, Carleen (James) Gilligan of Plainwell, and Marleen VanLent of Plainwell, 14 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren and his sister Lucille Hocking Lesman.

Friends may visit with the family from 5 – 7 PM on Friday, June 15, 2018 at the Winkel Funeral Home in Otsego. The family will greet friends at 10 AM Saturday at the Otsego Baptist Church where funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM. Graveside Services will follow at Mountain Home Cemetery in Otsego.

Carleen and family,

I am so sorry for your loss. Your father was a highly respected man in your community. My fondest memory of him was when he volunteered me to sit on one of the ponies he was training. Take care.

Sincerely, Vicki Parmater Harris

Big Daddy was super-sized, both in outgoing personality and in character, always setting the best example for us all. You ‘kids’ were so blessed to have him and your mom as parents. It seems impossible that he’s gone, but I know you have wonderful memories to sustain you. God grant you comfort and peace.

To my cousins and their families:

I am beyond blessed to have been led by God to visit with Uncle Carl last summer when I was home. I will cherish the memory forever. It was just the two of us as he shared a story from when he and Aunt Katie were younger. We laughed…and there were also tears. What a gift I was given.

This is bittersweet as I am saddened by his loss …but yet I am happy for him. His faith was so strong that he exuded an assurance that all will be well. He is where he wanted to be and once again with his beloved. In his parting, he left us all with a sense of peace and comfort.

My thoughts are with you now and in the coming days. Hold on to the peace, the comfort, and your memories.

Dear Holland family,

We would like to express our deepest sympathy on the passing of your sweet father. We enjoyed talking with him when we’d visit my Aunt Joyce at Stanford Lodge. He was such a gentleman! And of course John has special memories of him and your family when he stayed with his buddy, Dan as a kid. May God comfort you at this difficult time.

With Love,

John & Diane

What a difficult loss for all of you. Your father was an amazing man. He was always so ambitious even in his later years. He had to be in his mid 90s the last time I saw him on a ladder up against his house and was so worried about him. I went by again to check on him and he was working in the yard…unbelievable. He always had a smile for everyone and was so gracious. We loved talking with him; he always left you feeling good. Our thoughts and prayers are with you as you deal with your loss. How blessed you were to have him for so long. May your wonderful memories sustain you through this difficult time.

Love

Sorry to hear of your Father’s passing. Wonderful to know that he shares heaven with his Savior.

Remember the summers at Gull Lake when he and Katie were our youth sponsors. Many fond memories, his passing is a sad time for many who knew him and loved him.

We are remembering the family in prayer, God will be your comforter.
