Mary Ann Wood

May 23, 2017

Mary Ann Wood

Mary Ann was born on January 18, 1935 in Owensboro, Kentucky. She was so small she fit in a shoe box. When she was 2 weeks old she moved to Michigan with her parents, Anson and Velma (Gossmer) Reed. She grew up in Otsego and as a teenager had worked at the movie theater in town.

She was married at the age of 18 and had 4 children. Mary Ann was a tiny woman only weighing about 110lbs. Her first baby was a girl weighing 9lbs, her second was a boy weighing over 9lbs, her third was a boy weighing 10lbs and last but not least her fourth, another boy weighing 10lbs 4 oz. That’s when she said “enough is enough, they just keep getting bigger”.

When her children were small they moved to Plainwell. Mary Ann worked at Plainwell Sanitarium giving out medication and administering injections as a nurse’s aide. It was at this time that Mary Ann and her husband split up and she began raising her children on her own. One of her favorite activities was to pack up her kids and take them to Lake Michigan. There was always a car full of kids, anyone who wanted to go was welcome to come along. They went to several different beaches, exploring as many different ones as possible.

When her daughter, Deborah was in 10th grade Mary Ann decided to go back to high school to receive her diploma. She started classes with Deborah who will never forget sitting in front of her mother in Algebra class, laughing silently while the teacher did problems on the board knowing her mother had no clue what he was even talking about. Mary Ann graduated in 1971, one year before her daughter. She then went on to work at Parker Hannifin until her retirement.

On February 6, 1988 in Plainwell she married Robert Wood. They enjoyed traveling and had taken many trips in the US and had also traveled to Cancun. Mary Ann loved to shop, not always buying, but she could look for hours. She was a wonderful mother and was always there for her children. She lived a full life and always kept very busy in her home and yard and always found time to help take care of her grandchildren.

Mary Ann passed away Monday, May 22, 2017 at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo.

Surviving are her children, Deborah Hodgemire of Plainwell, James (Donna) Peck of Lawton, Douglas (Sandy Hall) Peck of Shelbyville and Gary (Sue) Peck of Otsego; step-children, Lynne (Joel) Cook and Jeffrey Wood of Gobles; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
