Robert Fry

Robert Allan Fry, 43 of Otsego passed away at home May 26, 2014. Robert was born June 2, 1970 in Plainwell, the son of John and Nancy (Deaton) Fry.

Robert graduated from Otsego High School in 1988. He also graduated from KVCC in 1997 with an Associate Applied Science with honors. He joined the U.S. Army in 1988 and served until 1992. He was in the 101st Airborne/Air Assault Unit in Fort Campbell, Kentucky. He also served in Desert Storm.

Surviving are his parents, John and Nancy Fry; sister, Debbie Kruse of Martin; nephew Kris Kruse of Martin; niece Lexi Kruse of Martin; Aunt and Uncle Carolyn and Bill Taylor of Otsego, Aunt Pat LaFountain of Allegan; cousin Diane Gettys of Martin.

He was preceded in death by his brother, John.

Cremation has taken place and burial of ashes will take place at Fort Custer National Cemetery. A Memorial Service will be held at a later date.

Floyd E. Slater Sr.

Floyd E. Slater Sr.

Floyd E. Slater Sr. age 76 of Otsego, passed away Friday, May 23, 2014, at Plainwell Pines.

He was born November 30, 1937 in Kalamazoo to Horace and Florence (Dornan) Slater. Floyd served his country in the United States Army in 1955, serving 10 years in active duty and 10 years in the reserves until his retirement in 1985. For 26 ½ years he worked for GM, retiring in 1993.

On October 3, 1959 in Three Rivers he married Yvonne Mellen. Together they enjoyed traveling in their RV to Florida where they spent the winter months in Homosassa Springs and Crystal River.  In his leisure time Floyd enjoyed fishing, golfing and bowling. He was a life member of the V.F.W. Post #3030, the Moose Lodge #345, and the Church of God in Florida.

Surviving are his wife, Yvonne; his sons, Floyd Jr. “Gene” (Angie) Slater of Otsego, Clayton (Laura) Slater of West Virginia and Steven (Char Pease) Slater of Waukesha, WI; nine grandchildren, Clayton II “CJ”, Cyle, Ashley, Travis, Mathew, Samantha, Justin, Kasey and Kevin; five great-grandchildren, Jakob, Dylan, Kaedence, Cillian and Jesslyn; his half-brother and sister Clark Matheny and Mary Raney; several nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death are his parents.

Friends may visit with his family Sunday, May 25, 2014 from 1:00 P.M. until the time of the funeral service at 3:00 P.M. at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego, Pastor Paul Hays officiating with Military Honors by Otsego V.F.W. Post #3030. Following the service cremation and burial at Fort Custer National Cemetery will take place.

In lieu of flowers contributions in memory of Floyd may be made to Wings of Hope Hospice or to the Disabled Veterans. The family would like to thank all those making donations in Floyd’s memory.

Verna Louallen

Verna Louallen

Verna M. Louallen of Otsego, Michigan, passed away Monday, May 19, 2014, at her home. Verna was born February 14, 1935, in Pullman to Robert and Irene (Finn) Burrows.

She had been a member of Bitely Community Church for many years. As a young girl she had helped at the Fly Inn Restaurant in Plainwell and then was employed with Plainwell Sanitarium from the age of 17 until it closed. Following her work there, she worked at Golden Pizza, also worked in the psychiatric ward at Borgess Hospital in the early 70s and ended her career working on her farm in Otsego.

Surviving are her daughter, Brenda Dunklee of Otsego; four grandsons, Richard (Jamie) Dunklee, Matthew (Jammie) Dunklee, Nathan (Jamie) Dunklee and Timothy Dunklee, all of Otsego; nine great-grandchildren; her siblings, Robert (Carol) Burrows of AZ, Richard Seekman of AZ, Stanley Seekman of Otsego, Mary Ann Schiero of Otsego, Karen (Jack) Campbell of Kalamazoo; a sister-in-law, Carol Seekman of Otsego; many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her step-father, Earl Seekman; an infant son, Walter Earl Louallen; her first husband, Bart Louallen; sister, Lorna Pirrone; brothers, Rusty Seekman and Daniel Seekman; brother-in-law, Joseph Pirrone; sister-in-law, Rene Seekman and her son-in-law, Vern Dunklee.

Friends may meet with her family at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego, from 11 AM Wednesday, May 21, 2014 until the time of the funeral service at 12:00 Noon, Wings of Hope Chaplain, Greg Carlson, officiating. Burial at Hillside Cemetery, Plainwell will take place later.

Brent Booyinga

Brent Booyinga of Allegan passed away Monday May 5, 2014 in Mishawaka, IN. Brent was born December 12, 1949 in Lansing, MI. Following graduation from high school Brent went to work for the railroads where he worked until he was no longer able. Brent enjoyed fishing and traveling, especially to FL where he had a great time visiting friends.

Brent is survived by his daughter, Laura A. Booyinga of FL; friends, Larry (Nancy) Shears and Tony (Barb) Powell; and friends and caretakers, Linda and Brittany. He was preceded in death by his parents and by his brother.

Burial has taken place at Oakwood Cemetery in Allegan. Those desiring may make memorial contributions to Wings of Hope Hospice, 530 Linn St., Allegan, MI  49010 or to Allegan County Community Mental Health, 3285 -- 122nd Ave., PO Drawer 130, Allegan, MI  49010.

Peggy K. Shearer

Peggy Shearer age 68  passed away Monday, May 5, 2014 unexpectedly at her home in Allegan.

She was born September 12, 1945 in Plainwell to Russell and Margaret (Rice) Filkins. Peggy was a 1963 graduate of Otsego High School and had worked at Kal-Equip and at Parker Hannifin for many years until her retirement. She was a member of the Otsego Ladies Auxiliary.  In October 1964 she married Billy Shearer at the First Congregational Church in Otsego. For 50 years they enjoyed spending time together at Eagle Lake. Peggy also enjoyed bowling, golfing and reading on her nook. More than anything she loved spending time with her grandchildren.  Peggy always thought of others and put their needs before her own.

Surviving are her husband, Bill; her children, Brian (Pam) Shearer of San Antonio, TX, Laura (TJ) Fuelling of Otsego and William (Melissa) Shearer of Kendall; 6 grandchildren, Bethany, Amanda, Taylor, Morgan, Jayden and Spencer; her siblings, Teri (Jack) Laster, Pat Filkins and Russ Filkins; her mother, Margaret; many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and special cousins.

She was preceded in death by her father.

Friends may visit with her family from 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Friday, May 9, 2014 at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego where a funeral service will take place at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, May 10, 2014 with an opening by the Otsego VFW Post#3030 Ladies Auxiliary and Celebrant Bill Rose officiating. Burial will follow at Mountain Home Cemetery.

Raymond Baker

Raymond Baker of Otsego, MI passed away Saturday, May 3, 2014. Raymond was born March 7, 1925 in Otsego, MI the son of Alfred and Anna (Beck) Baker. Ray worked as a farmer for several years before serving his country in the United States Army during WWII until his honorable discharge in 1943. Following his time in the service Ray had worked for North American Aluminum, Ano- Kal & Charles Service. He was married to Joyce Langeance Hall on December 4, 1954 in Otsego, MI. He enjoyed camping, yard work, flower gardening, working with his hands and being outside. Ray also enjoyed working alongside his wife Joyce as she ran Wee World Daycare out of their home for 13 years, Ray became known as Papa Ray.

He is survived by his children, Kathi (Dave) Tice of Allegan, Kevin (Tina) Baker of Allegan, Kristine Baker of Anderson, IN, Kimberly Baker of Allegan, Kenneth Baker of Allegan and Kyle (Lori) Baker of Otsego ; 8 grandchildren, Brian Tice, Amy (Doug) Brink, Jerry Baker, Jason Baker, Matthew Baker, David Baker, Jamie Myers and Angela Boyett; 13 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Alfred Baker and Anna Baker Klok; wife Joyce Baker in 2013; daughter, Karolyn Bayliff in 2002; siblings, Leona Bial, Verla Pillars, Dorothy Bronkema and Francis “Hank” Baker and grandson, Kenneth Ray Baker II in 2006.

Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 31, 2014 at 11:00 A.M. at the Otsego Church of God, with Pastor Stephen Burrow officiating. Burial of ashes will follow at Mountain Home Cemetery with Military Honors by Otsego VFW Post #3030.

Catherine J. Peacock

Catherine J. Peacock of Centreville passed away Wednesday, April 30, 2014.

Cathy was born in Kalamazoo, MI on March 15, 1932 to Charles and Josephine (Deurloo) Barton. Cathy graduated from Otsego High School with the class of 1950. On June 20, 1952 she was married to Donald Peacock at the Otsego United Methodist Church. She and Don continued to live in Otsego until 1965 when work moved them to Centreville, MI.

Cathy loved the arts and was a skilled spinner and knitter and a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother. Cathy had worked at the abstract office in St. Joseph County and had also been an advocate for the probate court. She had volunteered for the St. Joseph County Election Board, the St. Joseph County Fair and for Red Cross blood drives for many years. Catherine had also served as the Village President for Centreville for several years. She enjoyed birds and the wildlife around Pine Lake where she spent many summers at the Barton family cottage since the 1940s.

Catherine was an accomplished fiber artist who excelled at spinning, natural dyes, weaving, knitting and rug hooking, creating many original patterns and winning numerous awards for her work throughout the years.  She was a founding member of the Weft and Wooly Spinoakers, a weaving and spinning group in St. Joseph County who have given spinning demonstrations for school children and fair-goers over the years at the St. Joe County Grange Fair.

The most important things in her life were her friends and her family members. Catherine is survived by her children, Ray (Ruth Ann) Peacock of WI, Sue (Ted) Jusczcak of Sturgis, Molly (Tony) Ettwein of Portage and Bill (Yolanda) of TX; 9 grandchildren, Thad & Charles Juszczak, Catherine & Sam Ettwein, John & David Moschel, Amanda, Carlos & Trey Ozuna; 10 great-grandchildren; siblings, Charles (Naomi) Barton of Otsego and Jo Ann VanderBorgh of Plainwell. Cathy was preceded in death by her husband Don in 2001; grandson Benjamin and by her parents.

Friends may visit with Catherine’s family on Thursday, May 8, 2014 from 1:00 P.M. until the time of the memorial service at 2:00 P.M. at the Otsego United Methodist Church, Pastor Joe Shaler officiating. Burial of ashes will take place at Mt. Home Cemetery.  An Open House for family and friends will be held in Centreville later in May with date and location to be announced in Three Rivers & Sturgis papers.

George Blair Deemer

George Blair “Stubby” Deemer age 67 of Plainwell, passed away Wednesday, April 30, 2014 at Wings Home in Allegan.

He was born November 27, 1946 in Brookville, PA to Irvin and Elizabeth (Vandervort) Deemer. For many years he owned and operated a small engine repair business. In his leisure time Stubby enjoyed bowling, going to races at M.I.S., canoeing, Camparoma, bow hunting, wild life videoing, and L.M. He was a member of the Celery City Moose #2694.

On October 14, 2004 in Allegan he married Janice Gearing who survives. Also surviving are his children, Stacy Welcher, Steve (Mikkii) Deemer, Sandy Deemer and Scott (Cameron) Deemer; his step-children, Allen White and Heather White; 8 grandchildren, Tyler and Brandilee  Welcher, Jessica and Stephanie Deemer , Brandon, Megan, Alysha and Logan; 7 great-grandchildren; his siblings, Irvin “Dick” (Sandy) Deemer, Hazel (Joe) Gaston, Mary Lou (John) Rittenhouse, Daniel Deemer and Mona (Randy) Harriger; and his special nephews, Ryan and Lance Deemer.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his step-parents; and his son-in-law, Mike Welcher.

Friends may visit and share their favorite stories of Stubby with his family from 4-8 P.M. Monday, May 5, 2014 at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego.
