Gary Nimtz

Gary A. Nimtz of Otsego, Michigan, passed away Sunday, November 24, 2013 in Kalamazoo. Gary was born March 29, 1952 in Plainwell to Arthur and Betty (Filkins) Nimtz.

In 1970 he graduated from Otsego High School. For over 26 years Gary lived in the Boston area, where he was employed as an accountant and bookkeeper.

Surviving are his father, Arthur Nimtz of Otsego and Florida; a brother and two sisters, Larry Nimtz of Plainwell, Carol Miller of Otsego and Karen (Rick) Clemens of Kalamazoo; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins; and his dog, Millie.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Betty Nimtz, in 2011.

Cremation has taken place. Friends may visit with his family on Saturday, November 30, 2013 from 10 to 11 A.M. at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego, where  a memorial service will be held at 11:00 A.M., Pastor Darrin Youngs officiating. Burial of ashes will be at Mountain Home Cemetery, Otsego.

Charles W. Woodstock

Charles W. Woodstock

Charles Woodstock of Otsego, Michigan, passed away Monday November 18, 2013 at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo. Mr. Woodstock was born June 9, 1925 in Lake Mills, Wisconsin, the son of Archer and Mary (Coon) Woodstock.

Charles served his country in the Armed Guard and continued his service as a Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy who served on nuclear submarines. He retired from the Navy after 22 years of service having been a member of the armed forces during WWII and the Korean War. After his service he was a professor at the University of New Mexico and he taught about nuclear reactors until his retirement. Charles was a member of Faith Chapel Ministries in Alamo and the V.F.W. in Marble Falls, TX and Otsego. In his leisure time he loved gardening and animals. Over the years he had several dogs and cats, and especially loved his most recent cat “Ben”.

On January 27, 2000, he married Mary Ellen (Sornbury) Fergusson, who survives. Also surviving are his children, Connie (Stephen) Tigchelaar of Kalamazoo and Chuck Woodstock of Nottawa; three step-children, Steve (Linda) Fergusson of Martin, Laura (Kevin) Riddell of San Jose, CA and Mike Fergusson of Otsego; two grandchildren and nine step-grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and five step-great-grandchildren; a brother, Archer (Betty) Woodstock of Otsego; a sister, Mary Dennis of Traverse City; several nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were his parents; and brothers, Lawrence, Robert and Paul.

Friends may visit with his family from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8:30 P.M. Thursday, November 21, 2013, at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego, where a funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M. Friday, November 22, 2013, with Pastor Tom Koning officiating. Cremation will follow.

Jennifer Hodgman

Jennifer Hodgman of Kalamazoo passed away Thursday, November 14, 2013 in Portage, the result of an automobile accident. She was born August 20, 1985 in Plainwell, MI the daughter of Henry and Carolyn (VanDerVeen) Hodgman and was raised by her aunts and uncles. Jennifer is survived by her parents; 2 daughters, Baylee James Williamson and Katherine Abigail Cassanova; her siblings, Lynne (Nicholas) Paddock of Kalamazoo, Amanda (Randy) Jarnagin of Portage, Larry (Crystal) Keckler of Wayland, Crystal (Dominic) Anastasi of Plainwell, Jody (Micheal) Hueschen of Plainwell and Melissa Crispi of Otsego and a multitude of loved ones. A graveside service at Hillside Cemetery, Plainwell, will be held Monday, November 18, 2013, at 3:00 P.M. with Pastor Merlyn Jones officiating. Garth King Jr.

Garth W. King, Jr. of Plainwell, Michigan, passed away Friday, November 15, 2013 at Life Care Center in Plainwell.  He was born November 17, 1943 in Kalamazoo to Garth and Anna (Welch) King.

For over 42 years he was employed with Graphic Packaging. He was a member of Berean Baptist Church in Portage.

On June 4, 1971 in Portage, Michigan he married Lois Martin, who passed away in March 2010. He was also preceded in death by his parents.

Surviving are his children, David King of Otsego, Matthew (Kara) King of Arizona, Paul King of Plainwell, Lynda (Andrew) Baker of Warsaw, Indiana, and Amy King of Kalamazoo; six grandchildren; two brothers, Ronald Boodt of Oklahoma and Gene Boodt of Indiana; several nieces and nephews.

Friends may meet with Garth’s family on Monday, November 25, 2013 at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego from 10 A.M. until the time of the service at 11:00 A.M., Pastor Bill Abernathy officiating. Burial will follow at Mount Ever-Rest Memorial Park, Kalamazoo.

William Thomson

William Thomson

William S. Thomson, Jr. of Allegan, Michigan, passed away Wednesday, November 13, 2013 at his home. Bill was born July 8, 1958 in Allegan to William and Claudya (Doest) Thomson and was a lifelong resident of the area.

For many years he had been employed in the commercial cleaning industry. In his leisure time he enjoyed collecting John Deere and Santa Claus memorabilia, camping, traveling, fishing, mud running and playing video games.

On May 9, 1997 in Kalamazoo he was married to Mari K. (Evans) Thomson, who survives. Also surviving are his children, Crystal (Jason) Davis, William Thomson V, Desiree (Mickey) Christman, Teddy Evans, Donna Evans, and Claudya Thomson, all of Allegan; seven grandchildren and another one on the way; three brothers and 1 sister, Mark Thomson of Coloma, Julya (Jeff) Miller of Kalamazoo, Jeff (Cindy) Thomson of Coloma and Brent (Nora) Thomson of Allegan; many nieces and nephews.

Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at 4:00 P.M. Wednesday at the Otsego Church of God, Pastor Stephen J. Burrow officiating.

He will be greatly missed.

Carl Lumbard

Mostyn ‘Carl’ Lumbard of Otsego, Michigan, passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, November 12, 2013 at his home. Carl was born June 6, 1953 in Flint to James and Mary (O’Brien) Lumbard.

In 1971 he graduated from Comstock High School. He attended the Otsego Church of God. In his leisure time he enjoyed hunting and traveling.

On July 13, 1974 in Comstock he married Dixie Adams, who survives. Also surviving are his children, Chris Lumbard of Kalamazoo, Melissa Raseman of Plainwell and Brandy Paige; four grandchildren, Andrew, Owen and Ian Raseman and Makalia Paige; a brother, James (JoAnn) Lumbard of Allegan; a sister-in-law, Ellen Lumbard of Portage; a brother-in-law, Lyle Smeltzer of Parchment; many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews; lifelong friends, Dan and Leslie Butcher of Otsego.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Corodon; and a sister, Jeanette Smeltzer.

Carl’s family will receive friends from 10 to 11 A.M. Monday at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego, where a funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M. with Pastor Stephen Burrow officiating. Burial will be at Mountain Home Cemetery, Otsego.

Kevin Roselip

Kevin Dean Roselip of Plainwell, Michigan, passed away suddenly Tuesday, November 12, 2013. He was born August 29, 1971 in Kalamazoo, MI.

For several years he was employed reconstructing electric motors. Kevin always tried to be the tough guy, never letting family or friends know how much they really meant to him. But he did more for them than he could have put into words. His mom and sister were at the top of his list.

He was preceded in death by his father, Edwin Roselip in 1995.

Surviving are his daughters, Krystal Roselip of Otsego, Lacey Wiard and Alysia Wiard, both of Kalamazoo; his mother, Dixie Roselip of Otsego; brother Billy Roselip of Otsego; sisters, Kathy (Walter) Marble of Otsego and Sherry (Aaron) Shannon of Plainwell; his best friend, Glenda Pillars of Otsego; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Friends may visit with his family from 6 to 8 P.M. Thursday at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego, where a funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M. Friday, with Mr. Dave Nondorf officiating. Cremation will follow the service.

Maxine Kelsey

Maxine (Martin) Kelsey of Plainwell, Michigan, formerly of Otsego, went to be with the Lord on Monday, November 11, 2013. On November 19, 1924, in Otsego, she was born to Nellie (Hutchinson) and Ernest Martin.

She attended Otsego High School and graduated with the Class of 1943. On November 6, 1943 she married Fred Kelsey. She traveled with him before and after his return from serving overseas during WWII. Maxine was a devoted wife and mother and loved her family very much. She loved her home, doing crafts and loved flower arranging.

Preceding her in death were her father and mother; her husband Fred; two brothers, Lee and Robert Martin; and a sister, Thelma Punches.

Surviving are her daughters, Sandy (Dave) Holland of Kalamazoo and Sue (Merl) Lindsey of Otsego; three grandsons, Eric (Brenda) Lindsey, Kyle (Stacey) Lindsey and Cory (Ashley) Lindsey; two granddaughters, Robin (Jeff) Ritz) and Shelley (Chris) Turley; nine great-grandchildren, Zoey, Madison, Emma, Nolan, Alyssa, Owen, Steven, Kendra and Ryan; many nieces and nephews.

Friends may visit with Maxine’s family from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 P.M. Wednesday at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M. Thursday at the Otsego Methodist Church, Pastor Joe Shaler officiating. Burial will follow at Hillside Cemetery, Plainwell.

Jack Bower

Jack C. Bower of Alamo Township passed away Thursday, November 7, 2013 in Kalamazoo. Mr. Bower was born March 24, 1934 in Martin, MI. Jack had farmed throughout his life, and he and his friend Charlie Betke had owned and operated their own brick laying company. Jack had built two homes for his family. Jack’s favorite pastime was spending quiet time in the woods. He loved being with his family, hunting with his buddies and later in life with his daughters. Jack also loved fishing with “The Mother” and being with their little dog Gizzy. He enjoyed spending time with his friends, especially the monthly breakfasts. Jack treasured his Farmall tractor and his John Deere crawler.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Phyllis Taylor; their daughters, Cheri (Joe) Demmon of Superior, Montana, Julie Bos of Kalamazoo, Pat (Kerry) Boothby of Paw Paw and Jody Dorothy (Ron Doot) of Plainwell; 7 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and 2 brothers, Lorence and Ron Bower. He was preceded in death by his parents and 2 brothers, Walter and Don.

Friends may meet with his family on Tuesday from 2-4 & 6-8 P.M. November 12, 2013 at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego. A Funeral Service will be held at Twin Lakes Reformed Church, Wednesday, November 13, 2013 at 2:00 P.M. with Pastor Ron Lugten officiating. Burial will follow at Liberty Street Cemetery, Alamo Township.

Our family would like to extend special gratitude to Jack’s nurses on the 8th Floor at Borgess: Eric “The Great”, Amber “Little A”, “Happy” Sarah and “His Angel” Nicole and Vina.

Glen Riggs

Glen Riggs

Glen A. Riggs of Cooper Township, Michigan passed away Thursday, November 7, at the Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit.

Glen was born January 8, 1979 in Kalamazoo to Thomas and Shirley (Briggs) Riggs.

He had worked as a cook at the London Grill in Plainwell for many years and had worked at the Cooper Café for the last several years. Glen enjoyed cooking and following NASCAR, each year he traveled to Bristol TN to enjoy the race at the Bristol Motor Speedway. Glen was a kind person and had a gentle soul.

He is survived by his mother, Shirley Riggs of Cooper Twp. and by his sisters, Marcia Riggs of Plainwell and Corie Riggs of Niles. He was preceded in death by his father Thomas Riggs who died on May 9, 2013.

Cremation has taken place. A Memorial Service will be held in the spring.
