Michele L. ‘Micky” VanStelle of Kalamazoo, Michigan went to be with her Lord Wednesday, August 29, 2012, in Kalamazoo. Michele was born April 3, 1944 in Kalamazoo to Norman and Barbara (Loucks) Hess. In 1964 she graduated from Portage Central High School. Micky had a special love of children and for many years operated a Day Care out of her home. She was a member of the Plainwell Assembly of God. In her leisure time she enjoyed flower gardening.

On July 12, 1969 in Kalamazoo she married Wayne VanStelle, who survives. Also surviving are her son, Duane (Erin) VanStelle of Muskegon; two grandchildren, Joshua and Emily; two brothers, Ford (Maude) Hess of Portage and Jim (Loraine) Hess of Mishawaka, IN; several nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death was her sister, Dawn Kooi.

Friends may meet with her family from 3 to 4 P.M. Tuesday at the Plainwell Assembly of God, where funeral services will be held at 4:00 P.M., Pastor David Alderman officiating. Burial at Fort Custer National Cemetery will take place on Wednesday.

Scott W. Hanson

Scott W. Hanson of Paw Paw passed away Friday, August 24, 2012 in Kalamazoo.

Scott was born February 25, 1958 in Kalamazoo the son of Wesley and Joyce (Kennedy) Hanson. He loved fishing and spending time with his friends, cutting wood and being in the out-of-doors.

Scott is survived by his children, Zachary (Tammi) Hanson and Mallory (Tony) Moats; 2 grandchildren, Faith and Hannah; great-grandchildren; his mother, Joyce; his brothers, Tim (Donna) Hanson and Mike (Sherry) Hanson and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father.

Ermajean Wheeler

Ermajean Bernice Wheeler of Otsego, MI passed away Friday, August 24, 2012 in Allegan. Mrs. Wheeler was born June 9, 1926 in Otsego, MI the daughter of Raymond and Verla (Pillars) Laws. Erma enjoyed crocheting, holidays, making excellent fudge and cooking, traveling, bingo and spending time with her children and grandchildren. She volunteered for many years at Pipp Hospital.  

Surviving are her children, Jerry (Diane) Wheeler of Otsego, Donna (Richard) Underwood of Vicksburg, Don (Loretta) Wheeler of Otsego, Mike (Jabeth) Wheeler of Portage, Stan (Jeannie) Wheeler of Comstock, Robert (Janice) Wheeler of Allegan, Gary (Julie) Wheeler of Otsego, Elizabeth (Duane) Griffith of Comstock; 52 grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren; 6 great-great grandchildren; 3  brothers, Ron, Doug and Larry. Erma was preceded in death by her husband, James Wheeler, Jr in 1991 and her siblings, Derwood, Bernadine and Robert.  

Friends may meet with the family Tuesday, August 28, 2012 at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego, from 5-7 P.M. Services will be held at 12:30 PM, Wednesday at the Otsego Church of God with Pastor Stephen Burrow officiating. Interment will follow at Ft. Custer National Cemetery, Augusta.

Shirley Currie

Shirley Currie

Shirley A. Currie of Plainwell, MI passed away Thursday, August 23, 2012 in Allegan. Mrs. Currie was born June 10, 1937 in Midland, MI the daughter of Roland and Florence (Blood) Herman. She had been a Clerical Aide at Gilkey School in Plainwell and had also worked at Harding’s Market. Shirley enjoyed her garden, trips up north and going to the casino.

On May 17, 1958 in Sanford, MI, she married Robert Currie who survives. Also surviving are their children, Karen Dyer, Bob (Tami) Currie, Roger (Juli) Currie, David Currie, Diana (John) Buchin; 10 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her mother, Florence Weber, her father Roland Herman, her brothers, Vernard, Raymond, Kenneth, Dudley and Andrew; and her sister, Betty Riggie.

Friends may meet with the family Wednesday, August 29, 2012 at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego, from 10:00 A.M. until the service time of 11:00 AM, Mr. William Rose officiating. Interment will follow at Hillside Cemetery, Plainwell.

Harold “Butch” Carlyle

Harold “Butch” Carlyle

Harold ‘Butch’ Carlyle of Plainwell, Michigan surrendered to his battles with his physical wellbeing and pain by ending his life on Thursday, August 23, 2012 in Plainwell. Butch was born on August 25, 1945 in Plainwell to Harold and Ruth Carlyle. Butch was a past member and Deacon of the First Presbyterian Church in Kalamazoo and was currently faithfully worshipping at the Otsego United Methodist Church. He enjoyed spending time at Mullett Lake with his family, boating, water skiing and relaxing on the dock. He also enjoyed golf, downhill skiing, roofing and building. His father started Carlyle Roofing Company, Inc. in the 1940’s. Butch took over the business right out of college in 1967. As his health declined, Butch transitioned responsibility of the company to his son George, making it a 3rd generation company. Butch dedicated his life to his family and to the family business. On August 10, 1968 he married Anne Clark in Ashland, OH.

Survivors include his loving and supportive wife Anne; their daughter and son-in-law Catherine and Joe Gibson of Plainwell and their children, Ben, Rebecca and Sam; son and daughter-in-law George and Kelly Carlyle of Kalamazoo and their children Andrew and Grace; and brother and sister-in-law John and Nancy Carlyle of Spring Lake. He was preceded in death by his parents.

His family would like to thank the medical professionals, clergy and friends for their support and compassion, especially Dee Skislak and Marv Shook who have been a tremendous help over the last year.

Friends may meet with his family from 2-4 & 6-8 P.M. Monday August 27, 2012 at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego. Funeral services will be held at 11 A.M. Tuesday, August 28, 2012 at the Otsego United Methodist Church with Pastors Joe Shaler and Dan Minor officiating. Burial will follow at Hillside Cemetery, Plainwell.

Wayne ‘Ritchey’ Ray

Wayne ‘Ritchey’ Ray

Wayne ‘Ritchey’ Ray passed away Saturday, August 18, 2012 in Plainwell.

Mr. Ray was born January 2, 1921 in Rensselaer, IN to Verna and Marie (Ritchey) Ray. Ritchey served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Ritchey was a heavy equipment operator with the Operating Engineers Union Local 324 retiring after 30 years. He was a member of International Brotherhood of Teamsters Local 7, the Moose, Elks, the VFW and was a 32nd Degree Mason Life Member. Ritchey was involved with horse racing and barrel racing; and he was a founding member of the Prairiewood Golf Course in Otsego.

On June 29, 1940 in Indiana he married Elieen Goolsby who preceded him in death in 2007.

Surviving are a daughter, Diane (William) Cole of Otsego; 13 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great-grandchildren; 2 sisters, Sheila Beegle and Leona McLaughlin; 2 sisters-in-law, Marian Ray and Polly Ray; many nieces and nephews. Ritchey was preceded in death by his parents; his sons, Ritchey and Ron; and a daughter Deane; his siblings, Vernon & Darryl Ray and Colleen Mitchell. In keeping with his wishes cremation has taken place.

A memorial visitation will be held from 2 to 5 P.M. Saturday, September 15, 2012 at the Otsego V.F.W. Post 3030. Contributions in memory of Ritchey may be made to Southern Care Hospice or to the Otsego Veterans Memorial.

Joseph Swoboda

Joseph Swoboda

Joseph Jacob “Joe” Swoboda was born on August 3, 1935, to Edward Francis and Julia Marie (Klocek) Swoboda. He was raised on a farm in Northern Michigan and attended Boyne City schools. In 1958 he married his sweetheart, June Hermenitt, at St. Margaret’s Church in Otsego.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years and three sons, James (Lori) and their children Emily and Jacob; Jerry (Judi) and sons A.J. and Luke; Jeffery and sons, Adam (Brittany) and Ryan. Also surviving is his sister, Marie Macaulay of Davison, MI, and brother-in-law, Leon Nemecek.

Joe was pre-deceased by his parents; sister, Joann Nemecek; brother, Robert who died in infancy; and brother-in-law, Michael Macaulay.

Joe was a lifelong wood worker. He especially liked making oak furniture. He loved music and played accordion in a four piece dance band back in the late 50s. Also, Joe was honored to be an organist of St. Margaret’s Church for 26 years. His favorite times were Sunday dinners with the family around the dinner table.

A Memorial Service will be celebrated at 11:00 A.M. Monday at St. Margaret’s Church, Otsego, Fr. James O’Leary celebrant.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Joe may be made to the St. Vincent DePaul Society or Hospice Care of Southwest Michigan.

Gerald Halstead

Gerald Halstead

Gerald V. Halstead, Sr. of Otsego, Michigan, passed away Saturday, August 11, 2012, at his home. Mr. Halstead was born May 17, 1921 in Otsego to Orson and Alice (Tilley) Halstead and was a lifelong resident of the area. During WWII he served his country in the U.S. Navy. For many years he was employed as a welder with General Motors, retiring in 1983.

Gerald was a member of the Otsego V.F.W. Post #3030, the C.B. Club and had been active in the Boy Scouts. In his leisure time he enjoyed traveling, deer hunting, bowling, golfing and fishing.

On June 14, 1946 in Otsego he married Alberta Lawrence, who died in 1999. Also preceding him in death were his mother, Alice Halstead; step-father, Ben Wedel; six sisters, Virginia, Luella, Francis, Gladys, Golda and Helen; two brothers, Bill and Leon; a granddaughter, Penny Warn; and a grandson, Kenneth Birman.

Surviving are two sons and two daughters, Gerald ‘Jerry’ (Pat) Halstead, Jr. of Plainwell, Shirley Hermenitt and Steven (Janet) Halstead, both of Otsego, and Linda (Dick) Berends of Grand Rapids; 19 grandchildren; 38 great grandchildren; 6 great-great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. Gerald’s family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 P.M. Monday at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego, where funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Tuesday. Burial will follow at Mountain Home Cemetery, Otsego, with Military Honors by V.F.W. Post #3030 and the Navy National Guard.

Laura Pierce

Laura Pierce

     Laura Agnes Holliday Pierce of Plainwell, Michigan, was born at home in Lawton, Michigan, Van Buren Co., February 5th 1923 to Nellie Gunn Holliday and Stanley Holliday and passed away peacefully at Life Care Nursing Home on August 9, 2012. Laura’s mother died when she was 5 and she was raised by her maternal aunt, Nina Gunn Simington and Elwin Simington. Her siblings were Wayne Holliday and Sylvia Holliday Walters, both deceased.
     On February 7, 1942, she married Dale Kenneth Pierce, son of Willard Ogden and Daisy Cross Pierce, in the home of Nina and ‘Sie’ Simington in Otsego.
     Laura and Dale both worked in the paper industry in Plainwell and Kalamazoo, respectively. After early retirement, they moved to Leesburg, Florida with their precious cockapoo, Goldie, spending summers on Crooked Lake, Delton, blue gill fishing and enjoying retirement. Laura was a wonderful cook who dearly loved her family and friends. She and Dale especially enjoyed their retirement years traveling with their “Century” trailer club friends. They returned to full-time Michigan living in 1990 and resided at Royal Estates Mobile Home Park. After Dale’s passing in 2000, Laura moved to Baraga Manor in Otsego.
     Laura is survived by her 2 children, Ron (Sara) Pierce of Plainwell and Linda (Robert) Cooley of Otsego. She has 5 grandchildren, Joel (Angela) Pierce, Susana Pierce, Jenifer (Christopher) Blitz, Scott (Jerri) Cooley and Erin (Gordon Doolin) Cooley. She has 5 great grandchildren, Alexander Pierce, Jacob Pierce, Chandler Graham, Christian Cooley and Lucilia Blitz.

     Cremation has taken place. A family graveside memorial service will be held with interment at Hillside Cemetery in Plainwell.

Pauline Deike

Pauline E. Deike of Plainwell (formerly of Otsego) passed away Monday, August 6, 2012 in Plainwell. Mrs. Deike was born August 10, 1914 in Watson Township to Randall and B. Sophia (Nyberg) Brooks and was a lifelong resident of the area.

She was a graduate of Martin High School and for several years was employed as a bookkeeper with Otsego Sanitary Milk Co. Pauline was an active member of the Otsego United Methodist Church. She had also belonged to the Widows Club, Otsego Women’s Club and the Crystal Club. For many years she served on the Otsego Election Board and had volunteered for Meals on Wheels.

On June 28, 1941 in Allegan she married William F. Deike, who died in 1976. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Geraldine Stalter.

Surviving are her daughter, Carolyn (Christopher) Russell of Millersville, MD; a granddaughter, Valerie (Kenneth) Herrst of Jasper, AL; three great-grandchildren, Matthew Russell, Victoria Russell and Ashley Madison; a sister-in-law, Ruth Fast of Fennville; 4 nieces; 3 nephews; 9 great nieces and nephews; many great great nieces and nephews.

Friends may meet with her family from 6 to 8 P.M. Thursday at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Friday at the Otsego United Methodist Church, Rev. Dan Minor officiating. Burial will follow at Mountain Home Cemetery, Otsego.
