Pauline N. Betzner

Pauline N. Betzner of Otsego, Michigan, passed away Sunday, May 29, 2011. Pauline was born December 2, 1924 in Chicago, the daughter of Paul and Ruth Voight.

On September 19, 1946 in Berrien Springs, she married Frank Betzner. Together they raised their family in Allegan and for the last 20 years lived in Florida. Frank preceded her in death in 2003.

Surviving are 5 daughters and 3 sons, Margaret Seedorff of Leesburg, FL, Gladys (Doc) Laws of Delton, Ruth (Wayne) Coon of Oklahoma, twins Ronald Betzner and Donald Betzner, both of Delton, twins, Mike (Carla) Betzner of Mattawan and Pat (Donny) Grauman of Lindsey, OK, Marcia (Jinks) Mitzel of Plainwell; 16 grandchildren; 34 great grandchildren; 2 sisters, Bonnie (Ed) Schacknie of LaCresenta, CA, Mary Seymore of Benton Harbor; many nieces and nephews. Also preceding her in death were 2 brothers and 2 sisters, Paul, Jack, Betty and Mildred.

Cremation has taken place and there will be no service.

Lena Robinson

Lena Kathryn Robinson of Otsego, Michigan was surrounded by family on May 25, 2011 as she passed away in the comfort of her home. Lena was born November 19, 1937 in Kalamazoo, to William and Zola (Liles) Maze. Lena enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, making friends and gambling at casinos. While raising five children, Lena worked various jobs to help support her family. Lena married Dennis Robinson on May 7, 1966 in Otsego.

Dennis preceded her in death on November 7, 2008. Also preceding her in death were her parents; a sister Doris; and her granddaughter, Amanda.

Lena is survived by her daughter Sue (Gary) Zylstra of Sparta, son Bill (Carey) Burmeister of Portage, daughter Nancy (Steve) Motter of Otsego, son Dennis (Barbara) Robinson, II of Portage, son Darren (Jenny) Robinson of Shelbyville; 15 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren; brothers, Bill, Bob and Butch Maze and sister Shirl Brockway; many nieces and nephews. She was loved by many and will be missed by all.

A Celebration of Lena’s Life will be held on Sunday, June 5, 2011 from 3-6 P.M. at her home, 110 Washington St., Otsego.

Dean King

Dean King of Otsego, Michigan passed away Sunday, May 22, 2011 at his home. Mr. King was born April 24, 1936 in Eaton County to Floyd and Ruth (Thomas) King. He served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War. Following his time in the service Dean worked for Menasha Corp for 27 years, retiring in 2000. He was an active member of many organizations including: the Whittington Center Gun Club, Fennville Rod & Gun Club, National Muzzle Loading Rifle Association, Manistee Clan Muzzle Loading Club, the Gun River Conservation Club, the NRA, the Eagles, the Elks Lodge #1711, the Otsego Moose and the American Legion. In his leisure time he enjoyed hunting, muzzle loading, working on guns and anything out-of-doors.

On August 31, 1973 in Otsego he married Patricia VanDerhoff who survives. Also surviving are his children, Brian (Terri) King, of Allegan, Bryon (Kandy) Campbell, of Otsego, Deborah Smalla of Kalamazoo and Dianna Wilson of Otsego; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and a brother, Neal King of FL. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Friends may meet the family from 2 to 4 P.M. and 6 to 8 P.M. Wednesday at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego where funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Thursday with Ken Terry Jr. officiating. According to his wishes cremation will follow.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Southern Care Hospice.

Joyce I. Costello of Otsego, Michigan, passed away Monday, May 16, 2011 in Kalamazoo. Mrs. Costello was born February 6, 1937, in Hartford, Indiana to Clifford and Nellie (Hornbaker) Hall.

For 20 years Joyce had been employed with Brave Industrial Fasteners.

Surviving are six children, Hope Robbins, Lowell Warner, Charity Lynn Rush, Christina M. Costello, Constance Costello and Cynthia (Brian ) Schrier; her grandchildren, Heather, Rachel, Lisa, Joshua, Nicholas, Samantha Joyce and Alexander; several other grandchildren and great-grandchildren; her siblings, Clifford “Jake”, Joe, John, Jennifer, June and Jeff; many nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death were her daughter, Faith Edwards, in 1981 and her husband, Nicholas Costello, in 1989.

Friends may meet with Joyce’s family from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 P.M. Thursday at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego, where funeral services will be held at 11:30 A.M. Friday. Burial will follow at Mountain Home Cemetery, Otsego.

Leo ‘Grant’ Cole, III

Leo ‘Grant’ Cole, III of Otsego, Michigan, passed away Tuesday, May 17, 2011, in Grand Rapids. Grant was born June 26, 1952, in Flint, Michigan, to Leo Grant Jr. and Betty (Louise) Johnson. His father died when he was just 13 months old and his step-father, Ron Gilbert, helped raise him from the age of 13.

In 1980 he began working for Home Insurance, which became Zurich Insurance, and he was employed with them until 1999.

He enjoyed collecting cars, including MGs, an Avanti and a DeLorian, which he showed in many car shows where he often placed 2nd or 3rd. Grant also enjoyed reading, his cats and his dog; studying new religions and model cars. He loved philosophy, was an avid photographer, and had belonged to an astonomy club at the University of Michigan.

On March 14, 1987 he married Linda Venen, who survives. Also surviving are his son, Eric, of Grand Rapids; his in-laws, Susan (Kent) Bock of Gross Pointe Woods, Robin (Larry) Boeling of Oakland and Ralph Venen of Birmingham; nieces and nephews, Carter and Caroline Bock, Tim and Aaron Boeling and Sara Venen; an aunt, Leonore (Richard) Holsopple of Pennsylvania.

Preceding him in death were his parents; his step-father; and an aunt and uncle, Eleanor and Warren Weeks.

Cremation has taken place. A Memorial Service will be held at 10:00 A.M. Friday at the Winkel Funeral Home of Otsego, with Funeral Celebrant Bill Rose officiating. Burial of ashes will be at Mountain Home Cemetery, Otsego.

Wanda M. Kling

Wanda M. Kling of Plainwell (formerly of Otsego) passed away Monday, May 16, 2011 at Kairos Dwelling in Kalamazoo. Mrs. Kling was born July 13, 1929 in Otsego to Edgar and Florence (Stout) Casey and was a lifelong resident of the area.

For many years she was employed with the D & C Store, Skogmos, Newmans and Kal-Equip, all in Otsego. Wanda was a member of Peace Ev. Lutheran Church in Otsego. In her leisure time she enjoyed playing games.

On December 14, 1946 in Otsego she married Raymond Kling, who died in 2005. Also preceding her in death were a brother and five sisters, Garland Rowe, Mildred Doelker, Inez Hughes, Lila Ladd, Irma Kling and Mary Rikerd; and her son-in-law, Lin Ketner.

Surviving are four children, Carlene Ketner of Otsego, Keith (Sue) Kling of Appleton, WI, Stephen (Caren) Kling of Holland and Timothy (Rhonda) Kling of Allegan; nine grandchildren, Doug, Brian, Ben, Kelly, Chanell, Heather, Kayla, Gabrielle and Blake; 11 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.

In keeping with her wishes, cremation has taken place. Friends may meet with her family on Friday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 P.M. at the Winkel Funeral Home in Otsego, where services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, Pastor Jason Thiel officiating. Burial of ashes will follow at Mountain Home Cemetery, Otsego.

Robert “Bob” Spencer

Robert H. ‘Bob’ Spencer of Otsego, Michigan passed away Sunday, May 15, 2011 at Rose Arbor Hospice in Kalamazoo.

Robert was born in Kalamazoo to William and Trena (Meninga) Spencer. He was a WW II Veteran serving in the United States Navy and had been a driver/salesman for Continental Linen Service retiring in 1984. Bob was a people person who enjoyed visiting with people over a cup of coffee and enjoyed fishing.

On October 13, 1990 he married Geneva Smith who survives. Also surviving are a son, Jay (Iris) Spencer of Otsego; and a daughter, Susan (Daniel) Tinkler of Paw Paw; 5 grandchildren, Paul (Michelle) Tinkler, Karyn (Jason) Bouma, Sharyn (Dave) Bates, Jay (Matsue) Spencer and Rusty Spencer; 4 great-grandchildren, Aerial & Abigail Tinkler, Bailey Bates, Sakura Spencer; a brother William (Joyce) Spencer and a sister, Marcia Cairns; step-children, Lonnie (Lynn) Stenger, Steve (Christine) Stenger; many nieces and nephews; many step-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Barbara in 1981; his son, Steven Spencer in 1975; a sister and brother-in-law, Margaret and Lindsey Dugan.

Friends may meet with Bob’s family from 2-4 P.M. and 6-8 P.M. Wednesday at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego. Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Thursday, at the Otsego United Methodist Church with Pastor Joe Shaler and Pastor John Kepler officiating. Burial will follow at Mountain Home Cemetery, Otsego with Military Honors by V.F.W. Post #3030.

Howard B. ‘Tag’ Wesler

’Howard B. ‘Tag’ Wesler of Otsego, Michigan went home to be with his Lord and be reunited with his daughter, Kay, on Tuesday, May 10, 2011.

Mr. Wesler was born February 6, 1917 in Otsego to Ernest and Margaret (McDonald) Wesler and was a lifelong resident of Otsego. In 1935 he graduated from Otsego High School. Tag served his country in France, the Phillipines and Tokyo in the U.S. Army during WWII.

For several years he helped his father operate the Standard Oil Company gas station in Otsego. In 1932 they began home delivery of gasoline, motor oil and kerosene. Tag worked many years with the company in sales and delivery, retiring in 1975.

 He was a member of the American Legion, a life member of the Otsego Elks Lodge #1711 B.P.O.E. and a member of Travelers Protective Association. In his leisure time he loved fishing, especially ice fishing, and golfing. Tag was a loving, generous and devoted husband, father and grandfather. After retirement, the Weslers spent many winters in Florida.

On September 16, 1938 in Bangor he married the former Margery Abbott, with whom he had celebrated 72 years of marriage. Surviving in addition to his wife, Margery, are a son, Doug (Cindy) Wesler of Otsego; two grandchildren, Dannielle (Matt) Staeven of Otsego and Marc (Amanda VanderPloeg) Wesler of Bear, Delaware; a great-granddaughter, Sophia; 4 step-grandchildren; many step-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.

 He was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Kay Margaret Wesler, in 1954; and by his brother, Ernest ‘Bob’ Wesler, in 1977. Friends may meet with Tag’s family from 2 to 5 P.M. Sunday at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego, where services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Monday, Pastor Jim Davis officiating. Burial will follow at Mountain Home Cemetery, Otsego.

Dolores A. Rouse

Dolores A. Rouse of Otsego, MI passed away Tuesday, May 3, 2011 at her home. She was born August 25, 1927 in Plainwell, the daughter of George and Nettie Gauthier.

For over 25 years Dolores had been employed as a secretary at Parker Hannifin Corp. Dolores enjoyed bowling, golfing, crossword puzzles, wintering in Alabama, playing cards with family, feeding the birds and visiting the ladies at the nursing home.

On July 5, 1947, in Otsego, Dolores married Fay Rouse who preceded her in death in 2005.

Surviving are her children; Ann (Roy) Hoffman, of Florida, Mary Jo (Duke) Jackson, of Otsego, Mark (Karen) Rouse of Plainwell; 12 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren; sister; Dawn Rogers of Plainwell and several nieces and nephews.

Also preceding her in death were her parents; her brothers, Joe, George and Bob and a sister Audrey.

Friends may meet the family from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 P.M. Friday at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego with a Rosary at 7 P.M. A Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11:00 A.M. Saturday at St. Margaret’s Church, Otsego. Interment will follow at St. Margaret’s Cemetery, Otsego.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.

Joseph R. ‘Bob’ McKibbin

Joseph R. ‘Bob’McKIBBIN of Plainwell, (formerly of Otsego), passed away Saturday, April 30, 2011 at his home. He was born March 14, 1947 in Vicksburg, the son of John and Nova (Brimmer) McKibbin.

Bob was a veteran of the Vietnam War, serving in the Navy. For over 17 years, he was employed with the Otsego Public Schools.

Bob loved being with his grandchildren and his family, always joking around. He enjoyed Wii bowling at the apartment complex and watching Westerns.

On April 28, 1978 in Florida, he married Nancy Bagley, who survives. Also surviving are 2 sons, Joe (Sandra) McKibbin of Plainwell, Scott (Reanda) McKibbin of Frankfort, IN; 4 grandchildren, Johnathon, Hailie, Emily and Ethan; a brother, Dick McKibbin of Tennessee; a sister, Viola Fish of Bangor; several nieces and nephews, including a very special nephew, Trevor; and his dog Zelda.

 Preceding him in death were his parents and 2 sisters, Grace Jordan and Margaret Bagley.

Friends may meet with his family Tuesday from 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego, where services will be held at 12:00 noon Wednesday, Pastor David Alderman officiating. Interment with military honors will be at Fort Custer National Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Heart Center for Excellence.
