Ricky Lee Banks

Ricky Lee Banks of Plainwell (formerly of Otsego) passed away unexpectedly, Saturday, November 27, 2010 in Kalamazoo. Ricky was born March 14, 1956 in Kalamazoo, the son of Gerald and Marlene (VanSparrentak) Banks. He graduated from Otsego High School in 1974 and had worked for Parker-Hannifin for 11 years and for several area heating  and cooling contractors. Rick loved to garden, hunt, fish and just being outdoors. He also enjoyed helping others. Surviving are his daughter, Cassie Banks; his mother, Marlene Banks; 2 brothers  and 3 sisters, Terry (Patti) Banks, Todd (Chris) Banks, Deborah (Steven) Boyer, Sheryl (Jeff) Pirrone, Sherry (Tom) Manning; several nieces and nephews; Cassie’s mother, Mary Frederick. His father preceded him in death in 2004. A memorial service will be held at the Church of God, 112 Kalamazoo St., Otsego on Wednesday, December 1, 2010 at 11:00 A.M., Pastor Stephen J. Burrow officiating. Cremation has taken place. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to his family for funeral expenses. Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego.

Herbert F. Councell
Herbert F. Councell of Kalamazoo, Michigan passed away Thursday, November 25, 2010 in Kalamazoo. Mr. Councell was born August 3, 1917 in Cooper Township to Garret and Ada (Roak) Councell. He had worked for UpJohn Pharmaceutical until his retirement. Surviving are his sons, Kenneth (Sondra) Councell of Hartford and Russell Councell of Otsego; three grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; sister, Mary Lou Peck of Climax; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Irene (Wood) Councell; parents; step-father, Nathan Porter; daughter-in-law, Sharon Councell; siblings, Eva Bager, Laura Town, Elenore Smith, Doris Stohrer-Petterson, Charles Councell and Jack Porter. Cremation has taken place, burial of ashes will be at Galesburg Cemetery on Saturday, December 4, 2010 at 11am.Contributions in memory of Herbert may be made to Hospice Care of S.W. MI or you may perform an act of kindness in memory of Herbert.

Owen E. Pathic Jr.

Owen E. Pathic, Jr. of Kalamazoo, Michigan, passed away Tuesday, November 23, 2010 in Kalamazoo. Mr. Pathic was born April 1, 1940 in Alamo to Owen Sr. and Rosa (Pierce) Pathic and was a lifelong resident of the area. He owned and operated the Alamo Marathon station for many years and for over 32 years was a member of the International Union of Elevator Constructors. For many years he served as a volunteer member of the Alamo Fire Department. He also worked at the Drobny farm, doing repair and farm work. Owen enjoyed roasting pigs for parties and attending auctions. On April 18, 1958 in Kalamazoo he married Viola Roe, who survives. Also surviving are two daughters and a son, Robbin (David) Williams of Alamo, Jeff Pathic of Otsego and Christina Pathic of Alamo; six grandchildren, Larry (Catherine) Moore, Kelley (Adam) Miller, Allison (Curdy) Hall, Brandon (Halisha) Cunningham, Keith Cunningham and Robert Cunningham; six great-grandchildren, Faith, Anna, Kara, Keelie, Mason and Landon; a step-grandson, Michael Williams; three sisters and a brother, Pat, Evelyn, Mary and Dick; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister, Beverly Joyce; and a brother, Billy. Friends may meet with his family at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego, beginning at 10 A.M. Saturday until the time of the service at 11:00 A.M., the Rev. G. Patrick White officiating. Burial at Alamo Center Cemetery will follow. Evylin Sophia Sarach Vickery

Evylin Sophia Sarach Vickery of Kalamazoo, Michigan, passed away Monday, November 22, 2010 in Allegan. Evylin was born June 20, 1952 in Plainwell, the daughter of George and Margarite (Rex) Hatten. Surviving are 4 sisters and 4 brothers, Shirley Luepkes, Kenneth (Pam) Hatten, Barbara (Gary) Henry, Roger Hatten, Doug (Lou Ann) Hatten, George (Linda) Hatten, Velma (Art) Grate, Stormy Melson; many nieces and nephews, including Mike, Chad and Dusty, whom she raised. A memorial service and luncheon will be held Monday at 11:00 am at the Otsego Elks Lodge, Pastor Rita Miller officiating. Cremation has taken place and burial of ashes will be at Mountain Home Cemetery, Otsego.

Ethel M. Tripp

Ethel M. Tripp passed away Monday, November 22, 2010 at her home. Mrs. Tripp was born April 18, 1920 in Lehigh, Iowa to Lawrence and Geneva (McClain) Crouse and the family moved to Otsego in 1924. For 12 years she was employed with Plainwell Paper Company. Ethel was a devoted homemaker and enjoyed cooking and travel. On June 15, 1940 in Otsego she was married to James B. Tripp who died in 2003 after nearly 62 years of marriage. Also preceding her in death were two brothers, Melvin L. Crouse and Carl J. Crouse, and a sister, Patricia Vendeville. Surviving are three sons, Michael J. Tripp of Plainwell, Timothy W. Tripp of Florida and Matthew L. (Debbie) Tripp of Gig Harbor, WA; three granddaughters, Tammy, Lisa and Jennifer; three sisters, Nova J. Vanbaalen of Arizona, Dorothy J. Martin of Otsego and Reba Braswell of Kalamazoo; several nieces and nephews. A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, November 30, 2010 at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego, funeral celebrant Bill Rose officiating. Burial will follow at East Cooper Cemetery. Contributions in memory of Ethel may be made to Hospice Care of Southwest Michigan.

Ronald Lee O’Dell

Ronald Lee O’Dell of Key West, FL (formerly of Kalamazoo, Michigan) passed away Sunday, November 21, 2010 in Kalamazoo. Ronald was born June 17, 1950 in Muskegon, MI, the son of Russell R. and Joyce D. (Ritter) O’Dell. In 1968 he graduated from Kalamazoo Central High School and served two tours in Vietnam with the U.S. Marines and retired in 1991 from the U.S. Navy. Ron was currently employed as an Information Technology Specialist for the M.W.R. Department at the Naval Air Station, Key West, Florida. He enjoyed fishing in the Gulf. He was a member and Elder at the West Union Cumberland Presbyterian Church, Millington, TN and attended the Key West United Methodist Church. On June 28, 1996 in Covington, TN he married Nancy L. Beck, who survives. Also surviving are three daughters and one son, Mary (Mike) Campbell, Kimberly A. O’Dell, Russell R. (Suzette) O’Dell II (currently serving in the U.S. Army in Iraq) and Melissa M. O’Dell; three step-children, Sarah B. (Jon) Buchanan, Justin D. Beck and Cody A. Beck; seven grandchildren; one step-grandchild; his mother, Joyce O’Dell; brothers and sisters, Darlene J. (Mike) Holesek, Michael R. (Jackie) O’Dell, Kathy A. Sackett and David A. (Rhonda) O’Dell; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father and a grandson, Russell M. O’Dell. A Memorial Service will be held Friday at 1:00 P.M. at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego, MI with Pastor Joe Shaler officiating. A second Memorial Service will be held Saturday, December 4th at 1:00 P.M. at the West Union Cumberland Presbyterian Church, Millington, TN., Pastor James Hamblin officiating. Wendell O. Burkett

Wendell O. Burkett of Delton, Michigan, passed away Sunday, November 21, 2010, at his home. Wendell was born March 15, 1941 in Plainwell to Milton and Glenna (Worden) Burkett and was a lifelong resident of the area. He had been employed first with Allied Paper Co. in Kalamazoo, then worked  for Cytec Industries for 20 years. He also owned and operated Slide-A-Way Waterslide on D Avenue for 12 years. In his leisure time he enjoyed fishing, boating, watching sports, especially the Pistons and Lions, playing cards, fixing things, gospel music and above all else, loved spending time with his family. On November 20, 1964 in Kalamazoo he married Dee Ann Dolph, who survives. Also surviving are his children, Tony Burkett of Kalamazoo, Randy (fiancée Donna Barnhart) Burkett of Portage, Denny (Jennifer) Burkett of Richland and Scotty (Marcy) Burkett of Kalamazoo; five grandchildren, Ashley, Benjamin and Leah, Brandon and Ryan; his mother, Glenna Burkett of Otsego; two sisters, Rita Arnsman of Otsego and Jean Phelps of Plainwell; several nieces and nephews; and his dog, Buddy. He was preceded in death by his father. His family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 P.M. today at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday at the Church of God, Otsego, with Pastor Stephen Burrow officiating. Burial at Mountain Home Cemetery, Otsego, will follow. Contributions in memory of Wendell may be made to the Otsego Church of God Warner Youth Camp.

Catherine V. Preston

Catherine V. ‘Katie’ Preston of Kalamazoo, Michigan, passed away Tuesday, November 16, 2010, in Kalamazoo. Mrs. Preston was born November 13, 1930 in Noble County, IN to Ray and Fern (Irwin) Enos. Beginning in 1955 Katie worked with her family at the Alamo Nursing Home, which she later owned and operated until her retirement in 2003. In her leisure time Katie enjoyed cooking, quilting and being with her family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. On July 29, 1950 in Otsego she was married to William ‘Bill’ Preston, who died in 2008. She was also preceded in death by her father, Ray Enos, in 1984. Surviving are three children, Patricia (Frank) Perry of Kalamazoo, Donald Preston of Bloomingdale and Jim Preston of Kalamazoo; five grandchildren, Lynann, Quinn, Melissa, Vaughn and Whitney; eight great-grandchildren, Benjamin, Nathan, Jacob, Yasmine, Kiah, Samiya, Brennan and Emma; her mother, Fern Enos of Kalamazoo; two brothers and a sister, Perry (Betty) Enos, Walter “Ike” (Jean) Enos and Mary Lou Holdeman; several nieces and nephews. Friends may meet with her family from 2 to 5 P.M. Friday at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego, where funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, funeral celebrant Bill Rose officiating. Eleanore “Ellie” A. Porter-Smith of Gobles, Michigan passed away Friday, November 12, 2010 in Kalamazoo. Ellie Smith was born September 15, 1929 in Kalamazoo the daughter of Nathan and Ada (Root) Porter. Ellie graduated from Richland High School in 1947. She had worked many clerical jobs over the years her favorite was working at the West Michigan Cancer Center. Ellie enjoyed playing and watching many sports: from softball to stock car racing and from golfing to following the Lions, she enjoyed them all. She loved spending time with her family more than anything else. Surviving are three children, Yvonne (Wayne) Booth, Keith Drake and Gail Munn; 4 grandchildren, Wendy Pheils, Janet Mendocha, Kimberly Hoffmaster and Tammy Jo Nye; 7 great grandchildren, Matthew Mendocha, Brianna Van Camp, Ciara Hoffmaster, Haley Munn, Michael Mendocha, Paul Pheils and Drew Nye; 1 brother, Herb Councell; 1 sister, Marylou Peck; many nieces and nephews. Cremation has taken place. Friends may meet with her family for a wake today at 12:30pm at Murawski Tavern, 208 S. State, Gobles. Don  Smith

Don Smith of Otsego, Michigan, has “Gone Away With a Friend” on November 6, 2010. He was born April 7, 1939 to Dave and Margaret (Knight) Smith in Kalamazoo. Don graduated from Kalamazoo Central High School in 1958 then entered the USMC. He served in Japan and was honorably discharged May 11, 1964. He worked for 44 years at Parker Hannifin and enjoyed his job as a tool and die maker. Don’s favorite things were “Classic Cars” and going to car shows, cruising and going to Deano’s 50’s Diner on Wednesday nights with his many cruising friends. On December 12, 1981 he was united in marriage to Macky Morse, who survives. Don is also survived by three children, David Smith, Donnie (Michelle) Smith and Teresa Rayburn; and a step-daughter, Nancy (Doug) Risner all of Otsego. Nine grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren; 4 step-grandchildren; 9 step-great-grandchildren; a sister Frances (Robert) Rodenberger; 2 sisters-in-law, Phyllis Smith of Kalamazoo and Eileen Baurke of Le Mesa, CA. Preceding Don in death were his parents, 2 brothers Dave and Paul Smith and his step son, Michael Jerry Morse in 2008. Friends may meet with his family from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 P.M. Tuesday at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego where funeral services will be held at 1:00 P.M. Wednesday, Pastor Mike Risner officiating. Burial at Mountain Home Cemetery, Otsego, will follow with Military Honors by V.F.W. Post #3030.
