James E. Mathis
James E. Mathis of Otsego, Michgian, passed away Sunday, March 28, 2010 at his home with his family by his side. Mr. Mathis was born November 8, 1933 in Kalamazoo the son of Everett and Ethel (Layton) Mathis. He had been employed as a machinist at Eaton and Parker Hannifin. Jim enjoyed gardening, home improvement, camping, entertaining guests, swimming in and maintaining his pool. He is survived by 3 children; Dexter Mathis, Steve Mathis and Cathy Mathis; 3 daughters-in-law, Bonnie Janke, Deb Smalla and Pam Mathis; 8 grandchildren, Melanie (Jason) Hooker, Mark Mathis, Mathew (Alesia) Mathis, Marsha Mathis, Jim Mathis, Ashley (Justin) Schneider, Cristina Mathis and Nick Mathis; 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Florence; his parents; 2 brothers, Robert and John and a sister, June Zweedyke. Friends may meet with the family Thursday from 2:00 – 4:00 and 6:00 – 8:00 P.M. at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego, MI where services will be held Friday at 11:00, Reverend Fred Wheeler officiating. Interment will follow at Mountain Home Cemetery, Otsego. Those desiring may make memorial contributions to Hospice of Southwest Michigan.

Linda Lou Jamieson of Martin, MI went to be with her Lord while she was surrounded by her loving family on Sunday, March 28, 2010 in Otsego. Linda was born on October 9, 1948 in Kalamazoo to Clarence and Anna Bell (Stratton) Sweeney. Linda had been employed by Perrigo where she worked in their warehouse until her retirement on January 1, 2007. She enjoyed collecting teddy bears, doing embroidery and cross stitch and working in her flower gardens. She is survived by her children, Stacey Parker, Aaron Jamieson and Brian (Angie) Jamieson; grandchildren, Cora Jamieson, Cassie Parker, Robert Parker, Jeremy Jamieson, Dylan Jamieson and Hunter Jamieson; brother, Larry Sweeney; sisters, Esther (Ken) Morrell and Bonnie Foote; and several nieces and nephews. Linda was preceded in death by her parents and by her sister Connie Radke. According to her wishes cremation has taken place. Burial will take place at Mountain Home Cemetery in Otsego. Memorials may be left to the American Cancer Society.

Donald Ray ‘Red’ Pinks of Delton, MI went to be with the Lord Saturday, March 27, 2010 while at home with his loved ones. Don was born October 16, 1950 in Plainwell, the son of Wallace and Mildred Pinks. He loved hunting with his Uncle Ellis and his brothers. He loved all his family and friends dearly. Don is survived by 6 brothers and 3 sisters, many aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces, cousins, a special cousin, his ‘blood brother’ Greg Martel and a special friend, Tracy. Friends may meet with the family Tuesday, March 30, from 10:00 AM until the service time of 11:00 AM at the Winkel Funeral HomeOtsego with Pastor Bernard Blair officiating. Interment will be at Oakhill Cemetery, Orangeville, MI. In lieu of flowers, those desiring may make contributions to the Winkel Funeral Home for family for expenses.

Mary ‘Susy’ (Huitt) Cline of Otsego, Michigan, passed away Friday, March 26, 2010 in Kalamazoo. Mary was born June 14, 1942 in Allegan, MI the daughter of Howard ‘Sonny’ and Mary (Morrison) Huitt. She had been a Sales Representative for an insurance agency and a real estate agent for Professional Realty in Plainwell. She was a member of the Lions Club. Mary loved her family, friends and animals, having fun and life, she was always happy, never complained. Surviving are her sons, Bob (Laura Rosenberg) Cline of Otsego, John (Amy) Cline of Plainwell and Michael (Michelle) Cline of Battle Creek; 8 grandchildren: Mary, Matthew, Luca, Kyle, Andrew, Lexi, Alec, Duane; her sister, Barb (Pug) Huitt Miller; niece and nephew Jim and Lisa; loving friend Linette Russell and special friend Bill Personette. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jerold ‘Jerry’ in 1999. Friends may meet with her family Wednesday from 6 to 8 P.M. at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego. Marjorie N. Breck of Otsego, Michigan, passed away Wednesday, March 24, 2010 in Kalamazoo. Margie was born June 23, 1919 in Manistique, MI, the daughter of John and Grace (Fulsher) Wehner. She was employed with Parker Hannifin for 11 years and was the Otsego Township Clerk for 13 years. In her leisure time she enjoyed playing games, especially Scrabble, traveling, gardening, flowers, birds and dogs, sweets, especially chocolate, her farm and cooking Sunday dinners for her family. Margie was a longtime member of the Otsego First Baptist Church and the True Blue Class. She raised her own children and was foster mother to many other children. Surviving are a daughter, Teresa “Terri” (Garry) Parrish of Otsego; a son, Larry Breck; grandchildren, Tracie Parrish, Garry (Jessi) Parrish Jr., Chad (Kathy Burt) Parrish, Michelle (Jim Murphy) Parrish and Mykel Breck; great-grandchildren, Anthony, Austin and Kevin Parrish; foster children, Dorothy (John) Koehler of Dallas, PA and Jerry (Diana) Clason of Otsego; 16 foster grandchildren; 20 foster great-grandchildren; 11 foster great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Floyd (Irene) Wehner of Mount Morris; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, George in 1981; 2 brothers, John and James Wehner; and a foster daughter, Margaret Snyder. Friends may meet with her family from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 P.M. Sunday at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego, where funeral services will be held on Monday at 11:00 A.M., with funeral celebrant Bill Rose officiating. Robert Boerman of Otsego, Michigan passed away Wednesday, March 24, 2010 in Kalamazoo. Mr. Boerman was born November 9, 1930 in Otsego to John and Jennie (Arendson) Boerman. Bob served in the Army during the Korean War; he worked for Valley Metal then owned and operated E & B Machine Shop in Otsego for around 25 years. He had been a Scout leader, was a member of the Otsego VFW Post 3030, the Otsego Moose Lodge, enjoyed fishing, golfing and casinos. Surviving are his children, Terry (Millie) Boerman, Debbie (Tim) Anderson and Dee (Pete) Krcatovich all of Otsego; 7 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren with another on the way; 2 sisters, Evelyn (George) Klein and Geraldine (Bill) Berner; and a special friend, Mary Alice Allen; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Henrietta ‘Hankie’ in 1987 and his brother Kenneth in 1996. In keeping with his wishes, cremation has taken place. Friends may meet with his family on Saturday, March 27, 2010 from 10 A.M. until the time of service at 11:00 A.M. at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego with Pastor Don Ray officiating.Donations in memory of Bob may be made to Alamo Nursing Home or Rose Arbor Hospice.

Lois King of Plainwell, Michigan, passed away Thursday, March 18, 2010, at her home. Lois was born May 2, 1946 in Grand Rapids to Wesley and Marjorie (Giles) Martin. She was a member of Berean Baptist Church of Portage and also volunteered with the M.O.P.S. children’s group at Otsego First Baptist Church. In her leisure time Lois enjoyed sewing and gardening. On June 4, 1971 in Portage she married Garth King, who survives. Also surviving are three sons and two daughters, Matthew (Kara) King of Arizona, Paul King of Plainwell, David King of Otsego, Lynda King and Amy King, both of Kalamazoo; two granddaughters and a grandson. She was preceded in death by her parents and by her brother, Earl Martin. The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 A.M. Tuesday at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego, where funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Pastor Bill Abernathy officiating. Burial will follow at Mount Ever-Rest Memorial Park, Kalamazoo.

Everett C. ‘Red’ Eb’ Brock of Plainwell, Michigan, passed away Thursday, March 18, 2010, in Kalamazoo. Mr. Brock was born May 31, 1922 in Brodhead, Kentucky and moved to Otsego in 1958. For 12 years he was employed with Weyerhauser (later Plainwell Paper) and had also been a milk truck driver. Red loved to travel, hunt, the out-of-doors, animals and planting trees. He taught himself to play the banjo, Jew’s harp, dulcimer, drobro and the spoons. On November 2, 1946 in Norwood, OH, he married Hattie Ipock-Buckles, who survives. Also surviving are two sons and a daughter, Ronnie (Kathy) Brock, Sr. of Plainwell, Roger (Carol) Brock of Otsego and Darlene Brock of Plainwell; two grandsons, Ronnie Brock, Jr. of Sturgis and David (Jamie) Brock of Otsego; one granddaughter, Becky (Bill) Dennis of Plainwell; five great-grandchildren, Chad, Kyle, Abbi, Ashlie and Mollie. He was preceded in death by three sisters and nine brothers. The family will receive friends from 4 to 5 P.M. Saturday at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego, where funeral services will be held at 5:00 P.M., Dale Brock officiating. Cremation will follow. Contributions in memory of Everett may be made to Life Care Center of Plainwell.

James L. Claflin of Plainwell, Michigan, passed away Wednesday, March 17, 2010 in Plainwell, MI. Mr. Claflin was born March 3, 1941 in South Haven, MI to Kenneth and Eleanor (Dawe) Claflin. In 1963 he received his Bachelor of Science degree from DePauwUniversity where he was a Phi Gamma Delta. Jim then served his country in the U.S. Army. For over 30 years he was employed with Loctite/Henkel where he worked in sales out of Chicago. In his leisure time Jim was an avid golfer, a passionate live music enthusiast and enjoyed woodworking. Surviving are his son, Eric (Melissa) Claflin of Zionsville, IN; his mother, Eleanor H. Claflin of South Haven, MI; a sister, Nancy (Richard) Brinks of South Haven, MI; two sisters-in-law, Trisha (Paul Brown) Grimley-Brown of Kula, Maui and Judy Claflin of Augusta, MI; a niece, Kelly (Jeff) Shemberger, and their children Justin and Jacob, of Battle Creek, MI; a nephew, Tim (Shelly) Claflin, and their children Jace and Ben, of Kalamazoo, MI. He was preceded in death by his wife, Laurie (Grimley) Claflin; a daughter, Sarah Jane Claflin; and a brother, William Claflin. In keeping with his wishes, cremation has taken place. Norman P. Warning of Otsego, Michgian, passed away Tuesday, March 16, 2010, and went to join his 8 siblings, and sons-in-law, Tedd and Jeff. During WWII he served his country in the Army Air Force. He was the loving father of Star, Norma and Ralph. Also surviving are 6 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and close friends. The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 P.M. Friday at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego, where services will be held at 1:00 P.M. Saturday. In memory of Norm, gifts may be made to the Michigan Children with Special Needs.
