Clyde  Walters
Clyde Walters of Battle Creek (formerly of Otsego and Kalamazoo) passed away quietly Sunday, February 28, 2010 in Battle Creek. Clyde was born September 9, 1917 in Otsego to Henry and Tena Wolters in Otsego. He was a member of the Otsego Methodist Church for over 30 years and of the Parchment United Methodist Church after moving to the Kalamazoo area. He was also a Life member of the Masonic Lodge in Otsego. Clyde loved bird hunting, trout fishing and was a faithful Tigers fan. For 33 years, he was employed with Michigan Cottage Cheese Company and was Vice President and Sales Manager from 1947 to 1969. On October 19, 1938 he was united in marriage to Evelyn Querbach, who survives. Also surviving are 2 sons and their wives, Mick and Glenda Walters of Marshall, Dan and Shari Walters of Delton; 7 grandchildren, Scott (Claudia) Walters, Jeff (Kristin) Walters, Alissa (Scott) Deeter, Laura (Craig) Wood, Marci Walters, Danielle (Paul) VanderHoff and Aaron Walters (fiancée Lyndsay Hammond); 12 great grandchildren; a great great grandchild; 1 brother and 2 sisters, Ernest (Betty) Wolters of Mt. Pleasant, Hattie Burdick of Allegan, Flossie Wesler of Gobles; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by 5 brothers and 2 sisters, Henry Jr., John, Elmer, Russell, Floyd, Mildred Hurlbut and Dorothy Benedict. Friends may meet with his family on Friday beginning 11am with a funeral service to follow at 12 noon at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego, with Rev. Dan Minor officiating. Cremation will follow services. Interment of cremated remains will be at Mountain Home Cemetery, Otsego. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to LifeSpan Good Samaritan Hospice of Battle Creek.

Betty Jean Guild of Allegan, Michigan passed away Saturday, February 27, 2010 in Allegan. Mrs. Guild was born April 20, 1929 in Battle Creek, MI the daughter of Peter and Marjorie (Gradwell) Collins. Betty was employed as a nurse’s aid at Allegan General Hospital for many years and then worked at K-Mart in Otsego until they closed. She is survived by her children; David (Jo) Guild of NJ, Judy Nash of Belmont, MI, Sherry Honemann of Lake, MI and Sandy (Dennis) Forbes of Gobles; 7 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; 2 sisters, Pat (Ernie) Hagerman of Allegan and Carolyn (Jim) Wurzel of Virginia. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hurley Guild in 2007. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at a later date.

Burnath Brabon of Otsego, Michigan died peacefully Friday, February 26, 2010 at Life Care Center in Plainwell. Mr. Brabon was born February 6, 1915 in Martin. He worked for KVP (James River, Brown Co.) retiring after 23 years. Burnath farmed most of his life and had a “green thumb” he enjoyed gardening and his house plants and also enjoyed CB radio and camping. On July 19, 1934 in Morley he married Margaret (Gardiner) who preceded him in 1991. Surviving are 8 children, Richard (Jo) Brabon of Battle Creek, Robert (Helen) Brabon of Allegan, Donna (Terry) Wolfe of Martin, Eugene Brabon of Allegan,  Marian (Don) Phelps of TX, Wendy      of MN, Deborah Doll of Martin and Gregory Brabon of Plainwell; 26 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren. Also preceding him in death were his parents; and 4 children, Burnath Jr., Eleanor, James and Ronald. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 P.M. Wednesday at the Winkel Funeral Home where services will be held Thursday at 11:00 A.M.,  Pastor Dave Selleck officiating. Cremation will follow. Contributions in memory of Burnie may be made to the Diabetes Association.

Jennie Veenkant of Douglas, Michigan formerly of Allegan passed away Saturday, February 20, 2010 in Douglas. Jennie was born January 30, 1928 in Douglas to Frank and Betsie Veenkant. Jennie had worked for several Allegan area restaurants before working in the laundry at Pine Oaks Nursing Home for 19 years. She enjoyed crossword puzzles, playing solitaire, the Chicago Cubs and watching her grandsons. Surviving are a daughter, Sue (Robert Sr.) Sinkler of Kansas; 2 grandsons, Todd of Kansas and Thomas of Colorado; 3 great-grandsons, Christian, Colin and Thomas Jr.; 3 sisters, Frances Wentzel of Holland, Anne Miller of Arkansas, Edith Kaiser of Kentucky; a brother, Herman of Florida ; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by 2 sisters and 2 brothers. A Memorial Service will be held Friday, February 26 at 11:00 A.M. at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego. Contributions in memory of Jennie may be made to the American Cancer Society or Alzheimer’s Association.

Louis D. ‘Louie’  Keith of Plainwell, went to be with his Lord on Saturday, February 20, 2010, with his family by his side. Louie was born June 29, 1920 in Plainwell, the son of Dale and Catherine (Goss) Keith. He was a lifelong resident of Plainwell and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Otsego where he served as Deacon. Louie served as Staff Sargeant in the armed forces during WWII in the 874th Bomb Squadron, and flew 26 missions over Japan. He was employed with Montgomery Wards from 1972 until his retirement in 1985, then started Keith’s Sewing and Vacuum with his son Jeff and worked in that business for 18 years. On September 6, 1941, he married Marcelline Weaver who preceded him in death. Louis is survived by his second wife, Tyna Rutgers, whom he married on March 29, 1986; his children, Thomas (Debbie) Keith of Lake Charles, LA, Dennis (Patti) Keith of Joliet, IL, Kathleen (Dan) Hughes of Plainwell, Charlotte ‘Cindi’ (Paul) Hammond of Plainwell, Jeff (Tanya) Keith of Otsego, George (Michelle) Rutgers of Farwell, Virginia Rutgers of Plainwell; 20 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren. Besides his first wife Marcelline, he was preceded in death by his parents, 1 great-grandchild, 2 brothers, Milo and Robert Keith and a sister Irene Fox. Friends may meet with his family Wednesday from 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. at the Winkel Funeral Home Otsego. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11:00 A.M. at the First Baptist Church of Otsego, Pastor Merlyn Jones and Mr. William Rose officiating. Interment will be held at Hillside Cemetery, Plainwell with military honors conducted by VFW Post #3030 and the National Guard. Shirley F. Syers of Otsego, Michigan, passed away Monday, February 15, 2010, at her home. Shirley was born August 14, 1936 in MontereyTownship, AlleganCounty, to Norman and Alma (Taylor) Miller and was a lifelong resident of the area. For 44 years she was employed with Parker-Hannifin Corp., retiring as a foreman. Shirley was a member of the Women of the Moose. In her leisure time she enjoyed playing Bingo, fishing, hunting, mushrooming and traveling. Surviving are two daughters, Stacey (Syers) Thames of Otsego and Shanon (Syers) Bernier and her husband Byran of Plainwell; four grandchildren, Cody, Patrick, Samantha and Shelbea; one sister, Dixie (Bob) Howrigon; two brothers, Dallas “Butch” Miller of Otsego and Rick Miller of Plainwell; several nieces and nephews. Shirley was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Terrance and Melbourn. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 P.M. Wednesday at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego, where a funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M. Thursday, with Funeral Celebrant Bill Rose officiating. Burial will follow at Mountain Home Cemetery, Otsego. Contributions in memory of Shirley may be made to Wings of Hope Hospice.

Warren R. Paff of Cooper Township, Michigan passed away Friday, February 12, 2010 at his home. Mr. Paff was born October 30, 1933 in Kalamazoo, the son of Phillip and Faith (Goodell) Paff. Warren was an avid bowler, loved playing cards, especially Cribbage, and going out for breakfast. He was a sports fanatic, working crossword puzzles, hunting and fishing. He was a member of the Moose Lodge in Kalamazoo. Warren was employed at Georgia Pacific Paper Mill for 43 years, retiring in 1996. On October 23, 1987 in Allegan, he married Sandra Lucky who survives. Also surviving are a sister, Marie (John) Kremer of Colorado; his children, Pam (David) Oldberg of Kalamazoo, Karen (Walter) Kaminski of New Jersey, Timothy Paff of Kalamazoo, Scott (Kim) Paff of Plainwell, David (Stephanie) Paff of Kenosha, WI, Richard (Denise) Paff of Plainwell and Mark (Melissa) Paff of Kalamazoo; stepchildren, Pam (Spencer) Paul of Georgia, Terry Paul of Georgia, Tom Webb of Marquette; 21 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren;; many nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife, Patricia; and his uncle, Ernie Goodell. Friends may meet with his family on Monday from 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego, where a funeral service will be held Tuesday at 11:00 A.M., Pastor Jerry Bowen officiating. Entombment will be at Mount Ever-Rest Memorial Park in Kalamazoo at 3:00 P.M. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Sandra for her expenses.

Cynthia A. “Cindy” Sincler of Plainwell, Michigan passed away Monday, February 8, 2010 at her home with her family at her side. Cynthia was born November 21, 1954 in Kalamazoo to Walter and Rika (Kroeze) Griffith. Cynthia had been employed with the Allegan General Hospital for 35 years and had also worked at the Allegan Medical Clinic for several years. She attended the Otsego Church of God. On June 22, 1974 in Otsego she married Richard W. Sincler who survives. Also surviving are her children, Richard Lee (Mindy) Sincler of Otsego and Carmen Lee (Joshua) Cobb of Plainwell; grandchildren, Kaden Sincler and Peyton Cobb and a step-grandchild, Colton Parmeter; mother, Rika Griffith of Plainwell; sister, Sandra Burrma of Plainwell; and a niece, Elena (Mike) Johnson. Cynthia was preceded in death by her father. Visitation will take place on Thursday from 2-4 and from 6-8pm at Winkel Funeral Home where services will take place on Friday at 11am with Pastor Stephen J. Burrow officiating. Memorial contributions can be made to the Allegan General Hospital Cancer Foundation or to Wings of Hope Hospice.

 Sharon Lee Stevens of  Coldwater, Michigan passed away Friday, February 5, 2010 in Coldwater. Sharon was born December 16, 1941 in Otsego to William and Madeline (Goodwin) Vickery. Sharon owned and operated the Gardens Lounge and the Fly-In Restaurant, both in Plainwell. She enjoyed watching hummingbirds and burning candles in her home. Surviving are 4 sons, Donald Vickery of Fulton, Paul Knobloch of Allegan, Steve Knobloch of Charlotte and Brian Knobloch of Allegan; 3 grandchildren, Jason and Aaron Knobloch and Melissa Vickery; 1 brother, Bill Vickery of Mancelona; several nieces and nephews; her fiancé, Charles Brower. She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother Ray Vickery, her husbands Robert Stevens and William ‘Bill’ Knobloch. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society.

Donal G. ‘Don’ McBride of Allegan, Michigan, passed away Wednesday, February 3, 2010 in Kalamazoo. Donal was born January 21, 1926 in Allegan, the son of Harry and Beulah (Speese) McBride. Don served in the Army Air Force during World War II and was a member of the Allegan American Legion for over 20 years. For 26 years he was employed with Parker Brass in Otsego. On February 20, 1953 he married Betty McBride, who survives. Also surviving are 3 children, Don (Deb) McBride of Maryland, Peg (Bernie) Betke of Pennsylvania, Doug (Cristi) McBride of Nevada; 6 grandchildren, Tony (Carolyn) Betke, Dan (Annette) Betke, Mindy (James) Burns, Sarah Betke, Anna Betke, Andy (Julie) McBride; 7 great grandchildren; sister-in-law, Margaret McBride of Kalamazoo; special sister-in-law, Janet McBride of Allegan. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Raymond, sister Dorothy Greene and a brother, Dick McBride. Cremation has taken place and a graveside service at Maplewood Cemetery, Hopkins will be held at a later date. Memorial gifts can be made to any food bank or charity of choice.
