Devota R. Hill of Gobles, Michigan, passed away Monday, November 30, 2009, in Kalamazoo. Devota was born July 16, 1949 in Flint, the daughter of Merton and Ruth (West) Cottrell. She taught 3rd grade at Decatur Public Schools for over 20 years. Devota loved her family and her cats. She enjoyed camping at Lake Michigan and collecting beach glass and Petosky stones. She also liked to go antique shopping. Surviving are her son Stephen Hill of Gobles; her mother, Ruth Cottrell of Davison; a brother, Richard (Marilyn) Cottrell of Kalamazoo; nephew and niece, Scott and Lindsey Cottrell; a sister, Janet Fuller of Lapeer. She was preceded in death by her father Merton Cottrell in 1997. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held Sunday, December 6, 2009 at 1 P.M. at the Townline United Methodist Church, 41470 24th Ave, Bloomingdale, MI49026, Pastor Dave Haase officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the Townline United Methodist Church

Lawrence E. ‘Larry’ Sallady of Martin, Michigan, passed away Monday, November 30, 2009, at his home surrounded by his family. Larry was born March 5, 1948 in San Rafael, CA, to Wayne and Joyce (Bryant) Davis. He began his career at the Otsego Creamery and then worked 20 years at the Kalamazoo Creamery and retired after 8 years with Dean’s Foods. He had been a member of Teamsters Union, Local #7. Larry was much loved, enjoyed spending time with friends and family and making people laugh. He enjoyed reading, telling jokes, crosswords, Detroit Tiger ballgames and dirty limericks. He loved Halloween and would take vacation to take the kids trick-or-treating. On March 3, 1973 in Allegan he married Diana Gibson, who survives. Also surviving are 3 sons, Wade (Ann), Matt (Amber) and James; one daughter, Miranda (Chris); 4 grand babies, Lila, Nick, Colton and Calley Irene; a daughter-in-law, Tonya; mother and father-in-law, Fran and A. J.; brothers, Gary, Dave, Ted, Tim and Doug; sisters, Kate, Judy and Deb; many nieces and nephews. In keeping with his wishes cremation has taken place. A memorial gathering will be held on Sunday, December 6, 2009 from 1-4 P.M. at the Allegan American Legion Hall (Eastern and Hooker Roads). Contributions in memory of Larry may be made to Wings of Hope Hospice.

Maureen Herbig Nulty, wife of Greg Nulty, mother of Jacque Drobny-Commissaris (Jim Commissaris), Dan (Mary) Nulty, Terri (Bert) Cooper. Grandmother of Chad (Sally) Drobny, Marni Drobny (Mike) Owens, Matthew (Kelli) Drobny; Dana Nulty (Mike) Beals, Nicole Nulty (Keith) Vale, Tara Nulty (Andy) Callaghan, TG (Corin) Nulty; Kristen Cooper (Michael) Haines, Kathleen Cooper (Steven) Verduzco, Elizabeth Cooper (Benjamin) Simon; Great Grandmother of Carly and Erica Drobny, Abigail and Emma Owens, Morgan and Chase Drobny; Lindsay and Delaney Beals, Grant, Monique and Vincent Vale; Kasey & Anna Haines, Will, Sara, Nicholas and David Verduzco, Meg and Kate Simon; and Charlize and George Gregory Nulty. Also surviving are Carmen and Lyndon Cronen and their children, Maria, Monique and Bryan and families. Carmen came into her life in 1965 and Carmen and her family have been a part of Maureen’s family since. Also surviving are Jamie, Jamielynne, Trevor and Teagan Commissaris. Preceding her in death were Maureen’s brother, Les Herbig and parents Rinehard and Hilda Herbig and granddaughter, Desa Nulty. Maureen passed away at home with her husband by her side November 21, 2009. Maureen was born on December 16, 1913 in Grant, MI and was raised in Grand Rapids. She graduated from Union High School and attended Davenport Business School. On May 6, 1940 in Otsego she married Greg Nulty. They were the fourth couple to be married at St. Margaret’s Church in Otsego and have been active members of the church. They began married life in Plainwell operating a small grocery store. In 1945 Greg and Maureen moved to Otsego and started Real Estate business and then added Insurance. Maureen was Greg’s helpmate in the business. Their marriage was good, their dreams focused, their best friends lived barely a wave away. Maureen was president of William Crispe Hospital Guild, PTA, League of Mary and was a Brownie Scout Leader and member of Lady Elks. She also was a fund raiser for the Community Chest. . Friends may meet the family from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM Monday at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego with a Rosary at 7:30 P.M., Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, November 24, 2009 at 11:00 AM at St. Margaret’s Church, Otsego with Fr. Bob Flickenger and Fr. Donald P. Klingler officiating. Burial will follow at St.Margaret CemeteryMemorials may be made to St. Margaret’s School or the Otsego Public Library.

Bonnie “Bon Bon” Buzzell of Otsego, Michigan, passed away November 9, 2009 in Otsego. She was born on January 29, 1938 in Bradley, MI the daughter of Randy and Beatrice (Woodward) Shook. Bonnie was a homemaker and had also worked at Bittersweet and Joe’s Pizza. On September 23, 1955 in Otsego she married Darl Buzzell who survives. Also surviving are her children, Vickie (Chet McVay) Bourner of Kalamazoo and Scott (Amy) Buzzell of Otsego; 2 grandchildren, Andrew Bourner and Breanne Bourner; her siblings, Marvin (Linda) Shook and Ramon (Shirley) Shook; many nieces and nephews and her grand baby dogs, Woody, Lucy and Marley. She was preceded in death by her parents. Friends may meet with Bonnie’s family from 4 -8 P.M. Wednesday at the
Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego, A graveside service will be held at 11 A.M. Thursday at Mountain Home Cemetery, Otsego with Pastor Dan Minor officiating. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or Hospice Care of S.W. Michigan.

Marjorie L. Hendricks
Marjorie L. Hendricks of Otsego, Michigan, passed to her heavenly Father on November 8, 2009. She was born in Vestaburg on April 22, 1922, the daughter of the Reverend Alson D. and Helen (Irwin) Hendricks. Marge was a gifted musician, and after World War II formed a dance band with her brother Irwin, playing many venues along Lake Michigan. She played piano, organ and vibraphone, and taught private lessons for many years in both South Haven and Otsego. She was a great animal lover, especially of dogs and cats, and had a wonderful sense of humor. Marge was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Irwin and sister-in-law Betty and her niece Pamela Rowe. She is survived by her nieces and nephews Stan Rowe of Midland, Darryl and WiSeon Salisbury of Vicksburg, Lani and Tom Poynter of Copper Harbor, Dene Hendricks of Otsego, Wendy and Brian Moyer of Reinholds,PA, Kenton Hendricks of Parchment; her great nieces and nephews Tamara Kosinski of Ann Arbor, Kaitlin Hendricks of Plainwell, Lisa and Shannon Enders of Muskegon, Shona and Chad Drake of Kalamazoo; her dearest friends Debbi Coleman and Jenny Hoogerhyde, and many friends and former students. Visitation for Marjorie will be held at Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego, on Saturday, November 14, 2009 from 10a.m. until the time of the funeral at 11a.m. with Pastor Joe Shaler officiating. Interment will be at Grand Junction Cemetery. Donations may be made to the Kalamazoo County Humane Society.
 

Erica Lynn Mitchell

Erica Lynn Mitchell
Erica Lynn Mitchell of Otsego, Michigan, eleven year cancer survivor and Warrior Princess, age 29, of Otsego, Michigan, Ann Arbor, Michigan, and Port Jefferson, New York, passed into the arms of her creator Wednesday, November 4th at 1: 45 p.m. Erica was born May 21, 1980 at Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo, where she died on Wednesday of pneumonia.
 Erica was a lover of music, languages and learning. She was a voracious reader who loved to travel.  Erica was an excellent student who participated in the Academically Talented Youth Program at Kalamazoo College, was a Top Ten graduate from Otsego High School in 1998, and earned her Bachelors degree from the University of Michigan in 2003, even while being interrupted twice to battle osteosarcoma and recover from the amputation of her leg. Erica then attended Stony Brook University in New York. She had currently been working towards a Masters degree in Library and Information Science from the University of Wisconsin.
 Erica was preceded in death by her Grandfather Delmer (Dick) Mitchell, her Aunts Michelle Chappell, Becky Mitchell, Janice Wright and Laurie Holloway, her Uncle Dan Mitchell, and her Cousin Ty Mitchell.
 She is survived by her parents Tim and Jennifer Mitchell of Otsego, her brother Grant (Jamie Abbott) of Lansing, Grandparents Mildred Mitchell of Plainwell and David and Marilyn Chappell of Otsego, Uncle David (Karla) Mitchell of Plainwell, Greg Chappell of Zillah, WA, Jeff (Char) Chappell of Plainwell, David (Mary Pawling) Chappell of Kalamazoo, Nancy (John) Eaton of Parchment, Joel (Cindy) Chappell of Otsego, many cousins and friends, including best friends Lisa Held of New York, Sarah McPherson of Otsego, and Jeannette Bayyapuneedi (cousin) of Parchment.
 Erica’s family will be eternally grateful to their “medical family” Dr. Tina Elliott, Jean VanderMeulen R.N. and all the staff of KCMS-MSU Pediatric Hematology-Oncology Clinic who helped Erica win her battle with cancer. Her family was honored by the loving care shown to Erica by Dr. Eric Feucht, Amy Schense R.N., and all the staff working in Bronson’s Intensive Care Unit who did everything possible to save her life. Erica had been studying Judaism for the past several years; she and her parents were comforted by Rabbi Harvey Spivak of the Congregation of Moses, who helped to send her on her final journey. Visitation for Erica will be held at Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego, on Monday, November 9, 2009 from 1 to 3 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m, where the Funeral will take place on Tuesday, November 10, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family would welcome donations to the American Cancer Society or to KCMS-PHO for the children’s “Toy Closet” at Dr. Elliott’s office.
