Mr. Carroll  McNutt

Mr. Carroll ‘Mac’ McNutt of Otsego, Michigan, passed away on Friday, November 28, 2008 at Borgess Hospital. Carroll was born July 31, 1915 in Cadillac, Michigan, the son of John and Della (Homan) McNutt. On October 5, 1940, he was united in marriage to Florence (Russon) Clair.  Carroll was employed by the city of Otsego, retiring in 1978.  He was a member of the Otsego United Methodist Church. Mr. McNutt enjoyed reading, hunting and fishing. Surviving are two children, Sandra Brown of Decatur, Alabama, James (Alka) McNutt of Battle Creek; seven grandchildren, Megan Bolton, Randall Terry, Patrick Terry and Angie Roden, Jeff Hamilton, Mark McNutt, Pam Morgan; six great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Florence, and grandson, John McNutt. Visitation will be Monday, December 1, from 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 8:00pm at Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego, where services will take place Tuesday, December 2, at 11:00am, Pastor Joe Shaler officiating. Interment will be at Mountain Home Cemetery, Otsego. Memorials may be made to Otsego United Methodist Church.

Michael D. Harrington of Gobles, Michigan, died Tuesday, November 25, 2008, in Kalamazoo. Mike was born September 16, 1953 in Kalamazoo to Elver and Jean (Krohn) Harrington and was a lifelong resident of the area. He was a graduate of Plainwell High School and had been employed for many years as an auto mechanic. Mike loved NASCAR, crossword puzzles and scratch off lottery tickets. Surviving are four children, Melissa (Chris) Porterfield of Allegan, Jason (Elisha) Harrington of Otsego, Chris Harrington of Manistee and Curt Harrington of Kendall; six grandchildren, Blade, Alexa, Cage, Skylar, Taylar and Alexis; a sister, Karen (Earl) Stedman of Gobles; two brothers, Dick (Pam) Harrington of Otsego and Dale (Deb) Harrington of Plainwell; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a grandson, Parkar. Cremation has taken place. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday at 1:30 P.M. at Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego, with Pastor David Johnson officiating. Contributions in memory of Mike may be made to Jason Harrington to help with funeral expenses.

Kenneth H. ‘Kenny Dark, Jr. of Otsego, Michigan passed away suddenly Monday, November 24, 2008, as the result of an accident. Kenny was born December 22, 1950, in Kalamazoo to Kenneth H. Sr. and Mary Ann (Wilgenhof) Dark, and was a lifelong resident of the area. For many years he was employed with Beloit Wheeler, currently Millassist. Kenny loved his animals, dogs, cats and horses, and enjoyed riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle.
Surviving are his longtime companion, best friend and life partner, Nicki DeLeeuw; his children, Tracy (Shawn) Howerton of Vicksburg, Kenneth James Sr. (Amy) Dark of Portage and Dale (Amy) DeLeeuw of Comstock; 8 grandchildren, Amber, Kelsey, Krysta, Emily, Kenny Jr., Megan, Lillie and Rose; his mother, Mary Ann Dark; 8 siblings, Mary (David) Gorsline, Roy Dark, Montanna (Terry) Maury, Clay (Becky) Dark, Vicky (Pete) Anderson, Rebecca Dark, Howard (Lisa) Dark and Tony (Gary) Ritchie; many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 P.M. Friday at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego, where services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, with funeral celebrant Bill Rose officiating. Burial will follow at Mountain Home Cemetery, Otsego.

Helen E. McHale of Otsego, Michigan, passed away Friday, November 21, 2008 at her home. Helen was born May 1, 1937 in Plainwell, the daughter of Frank and Mary ‘Lillie’ (Green) Townsend. Helen had been a member of the Civil Air Patrol and the Otsego Moose. Helen enjoyed crocheting, drawing, playing the organ, gardening, painting and feeding the squirrels.  On April 13, 1963 at the Church of God in Otsego, she married William E. McHale Sr. who preceded her in death February 19, 2008. Surviving are her son William A. ‘Bill’ McHale of Otsego and her sister, Chris Strelow of Plainwell; 2 step daughters, Elaine Pennisi of Monterey, CA and Debra Helean of Twin Falls, ID; a sister-in-law, Virginia Allen and numerous cousins. Helen was also preceded in death by her parents; 2 sisters, Margaret ‘Marg’ Brown and Bernice Rogers and a brother, Frank E. Townsend. Friends may meet with the family Sunday from 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego, MI,where services will be held Monday at 11:00 A.M., Pastor Bill Smith of the Kalamazoo Youth For Christ officiating. Interment will follow at Mountain Home Cemetery, Otsego. Those desiring may make memorial contributions to Southern Care Hospice.

William B. Preston

William B. Preston of Alamo Township passed away Saturday, November 15, 2008 in Kalamazoo. Bill was born December 2, 1926 in Columbus, Ohio, the son of John and Zita (Geran) Preston. He was a Veteran of WW II, serving in the Navy. He was employed with Parchment Paper mill for many years and for 53 years he was employed at the Alamo Nursing Home. In his spare time, Bill enjoyed doing yard work, mowing, watching Ohio State football and loved spending time with his family. On July 29, 1950 in Otsego, he married Catherine Enos, who survives. Also surviving are 1 daughter and 2 sons, Patricia (Frank) Perry of Kalamazoo, Donald Preston of Gobles and James Preston of Kalamazoo; 5 grandchildren, Lynann, Quinn, Melissa, Vaughn and Whitney; 7 great grandchildren, Benjamin, Nathan, Jacob, Yasmine, Kiah, Samiya and Brennan; his mother-in-law, Fern Enos. Friends may meet with his family from 4 to 7 P.M. Tuesday at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego, where a funeral service will be held Wednesday at 1:00 P. M., Pastor Gregory Yarworth officiating. Military honors by VFW Post #3030 will be at Alamo Center Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society or the Alamo Nursing Home.

Donna B. Knight of Otsego, Michigan, passed away Wednesday, November 12, 2008, in Kalamazoo. Mrs. Knight was born November 9, 1918, in Martin to Homer and Daisy (Tilley) McDonald and had been a lifelong resident of the area. In 1937 she graduated from OtsegoHigh School. For several years she delivered the Kalamazoo Gazette, drove school bus, was a waitress at Mol’s and Judy’s Restaurants, and for many years was a rural mail carrier with the Otsego Post Office. Donna was an active member of the OtsegoUnitedMethodistChurch for over 70 years and was the oldest living member. She was an avid bowler for over 50 years and also an avid card player. Family gatherings were very important to Donna and she loved to go out to eat. She had traveled overseas with the Plainwell Seniors under the watchful eye of Pam Hopkins. On July 29, 1939 in Otsego she married Kermit Knight who died in 1991. Also preceding her in death were her siblings, William, George, Carl, twins Lee and Lena, Bob, and Donna’s twin, Dorothy Knight. Surviving are 3 daughters and 2 sons, Sue Higgs of Otsego, Ken (Joy) Knight of Plainwell, Kerry (Sue) Knight of Otsego, Roxanne (Chris) Orr of Martin and Sherry (Ken) Schumaker of Otsego; 16 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; her sister, Jean (Donald) Marks of Kentucky; a sister-in-law, Mildred McDonald of Allegan; many nieces and nephews; and her lifelong friend, Lois Story. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 P.M. Friday and 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 P.M. Saturday at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Sunday at the United Methodist Church of Otsego, with Pastor Joe Shaler officiating. Burial will follow at Mountain Home Cemetery, Otsego. Contributions in memory of Donna may be made to the United Methodist Church for the stained glass window restoration fund.

Ronald Merle Page was born on March 20, 1927 in Allegan, Michigan to the late Floyd and Rena Page. He departed this life peacefully on November 11, 2008 at the Hernado-Pasco Hospice.  He was predeceased by his wife Nina Page; daughter, Nancy Johnson; brothers, Eddie and Lloyd Page and granddaughter, Shane Vote. Ron was a proud veteran.  He served his country during World War II in the Navy as a baker.  He was also honored to serve as the VFW Commander for Post 3667 in Allegan, Michigan.  Ron retired from Rockwell International after 35 years of service as a machinist.  He really enjoyed yard sales, casinos and westerns.  A hobby of yard saling turned him into a parttime businessman, where he was free to haggle for hours.  For those who know Ron best can all agree he would not let you go hungry -- he loved to cook and if by chance he didn’t, you were in for a treat “The $.99 Special.”  He will be missed for so many of his qualities, his unwavering love, dedication and hard work just to name a few by those who knew and loved him.  He is survived by his children, Donn M. Page and (Jeannette) Trissa Kelly, daughter-in-law, Carla L. Page; son-in-law, Mike Zalsman; brother, Morris Page; sister, Nancy Brower; 6 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren and other loving relatives and special friends.

Dorothy E. Burroughs Wagner of Otsego, MI, passed away Monday, November 10, 2008 in Kalamazoo. Mrs. Wagner was born August 9, 1921 in Plainwell to Harvey and Maude (Johnson) Hartwell. For many years she was employed with Otsego Sanitary Milk and the Plainwell Granary. She had also been a volunteer with Christian Neighbors. Dorothy enjoyed reading and was an excellent seamstress and quilter. She donated several of her quilts for fund raisers. Surviving are a daughter and a son, Linda DeBoer of Otsego and Richard ‘Dennis’ Burroughs of Kalamazoo; 10 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; 5 great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Arthur Hartwell of Independence, MO; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Walter ‘Ron’ Burroughs; and a brother, Ernest Hartwell. Cremation has taken place. A Memorial Service will be held Friday at 11:00 A.M. at Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego, with Pastor Dave Alderman officiating. Burial will be at Mountain Home Cemetery, Otsego. Contributions in memory of Dorothy may be made to Christian Neighbors.

Dennis A. Robinson
Dennis A. Robinson of Otsego, MI passed away Friday, November 7, 2008 at his home. Dennis was born December 16, 1938 in Kalamazoo, the son of Asa Robinson and Garni (Stopher) Burr. He graduated from Plainwell High School in the class of 1956 and he served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1959 to 1963. Dennis was employed as a Substation Journeyman Tech. with Newkirk Electric retiring in 2002, and was a member of IBEW Local 876 for 36 years. He was a member of the Marine Corps League, NRA – Trappers Assoc., VFW Dad’s #56 and a metal detecting club. Dennis enjoyed golf, metal detecting, sports, his family, hunting and fishing and was a good friend of Bill W. for 32 years. On May 7, 1966 in Parchment, he married the former Lena Maze who survives. Also surviving are 5 children and their spouses, Sue (Gary) Zylstra, Bill (Carey) Burmeister, Nancy (Steve) Motter, Dennis (Barbara) Robinson and Darren (Jenny) Robinson; 16 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a granddaughter. Friends may meet with the family Monday from 2:00 to 4:00 and from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Winkel Funeral Home where services will be held Tuesday at 1:00 PM, Pastor Ray Brown officiating. Military honors will be conducted by VFW Post #3030 at Mountain Home Cemetery, Otsego. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to Borgess VNA and Hospice services.

Zbigniew  Slotwinski
Zbigniew “Ziggy” Slotwinski of Kalamazoo, MI died Tuesday, November 4, 2008, at Tendercare of Kalamazoo. Zbigniew was born August 25, 1926 in Drohoycz, Poland to Tadeusz and Jozefa (Szandrowska) Slotwinski. In Poland he had worked as an engineer and held several patents for his inventions. In Michigan Mr. Slotwinski had worked for Meto-Plast Inc. until his retirement. He enjoyed music, cooking, fishing and loved designing and inventing. Surviving are his children: Zofia Iwaniak of Vancouver, B.C. and Zbignew Slotwinski Jr. of Kalamazoo; his grandchildren: Wojciech Iwaniak, Ewa Slotwinski and Aleksander Slotwinski; his sister Zofia Maruniak of Otsego; and his nieces Barbara and Teresa. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother-in-law Adam Maruniak and his niece Lidia Maruniak. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at St. Margaret’s Catholic Church in Otsego on Saturday at 11am with Fr. Wieslaw Lipka officiating.
