Thelma M. Brooks of Otsego Died Thursday, March 27, 2008, at The AlleganCounty Medical Care Facility. Mrs. Brooks Was Born November 14, 1934 in Otsego to Willard And Rosemond (Osborne) Harper And Was a Lifelong Resident of The Area. For 27 Years She Had Been Employed With Parker-hannifin Brass in Otsego. Thelma Was a Very Generous, Community-minded Person, And Enjoyed Supporting People in Any Way She Could. She Was a Wonderful Gardener And Enjoyed Growing Flowers And Giving Them to Her Friends. She Also Enjoyed Feeding And Watching The Birds And Had a Great Reverence For Nature. For The Last 7 Years She Was a Member of LighthouseBaptistChurch. Surviving Are Two Daughters And a Son, Carrie Babbitt of Allegan, Fred (Karen Lynne) Grinnell, Jr. Of Beaverton, or And Rose Grinnell of Otsego; Three Grandchildren, Shawn And Seth Babbitt, And Dustin Fortsch; Siblings, Virginia Oetman of Hamilton, Willard Harper, Jr. Of Otsego, Eleanor Campbell of Mississippi, Bernard Harper of Martin, Alfred Harper of Otsego, Tom Walters of Constantine And Terri Ann Harper of Otsego; An Aunt, Beatrice Anson, of Plainwell; Many Nieces And Nephews. She Was Preceded in Death BY Her Parents And BY Her Husband, Willard ‘Bill’ Brooks. Cremation Has Taken Place. A Memorial Service Will be Held at 11:00 A.m. Wednesday at LighthouseBaptistChurch, 12220 Cressey Road, Plainwell, Michigan With Pastor Jerry Bowen Officiating. A Graveside Committal Service of The Ashes Will be Held at 3:00 P.m. Priscilla E. ‘Beth’ Slack of Otsego passed away Wednesday, March 26, 2008 in Kalamazoo. Beth was born August 23, 1927 in Grand Rapids, the daughter of August and Henrietta (Termeer) Kroon. She was a member of East Martin Christian Reformed Church. She enjoyed her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, socializing with friends, going out to eat and playing bingo. On October 21, 1955 she married Daniel Slack who preceded her in death in 1988. She is survived by 3 daughters; Judi Markey of Fairfield, CA, Nancy (Rod) Tobias of Delton and Sandy (Glenn) Cook of Bloomingdale; 2 grandchildren; Amanda (Troy) Risner & Joshua Tobias; 2 great-grandchildren; Carter & Brooke Risner; her siblings; John Kroon of Grand Rapids and Tom (Eva) Kroon of Bass Lake, CA; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brother Phil Kroon in 1988. Friends may meet with the family Sunday from 2-4 and 6-8 at the Winkel Funeral Home where services will be held Monday at 2:00 P.M., Pastor Jake Weeda officiating. Interment will follow at MountainHomeCemetery, Otsego. Those desiring may make memorial contributions to VFW Post #3030 of Otsego or to the Activities Center of Lifecare Center of Plainwell.

Ruby A. Hodell of Otsego passed away Wednesday, March 26, 2008 at her home. Mrs. Hodell was born May 28, 1909, in Frankenmuth, MI, the daughter of Sigmond and Rose (Veit) Rupprecht. Ruby was a 1927 graduate of SaginawHigh School and a 1932 graduate of Saginaw GeneralHospitalNursingSchool. For many years she had been employed as a registered nurse at Pipp Community Hospice in Plainwell. Ruby was baptized at St. Lawrence Church in Frankenmuth, confirmed at the Saginaw Trinity LutheranChurch and was a member of Peace Ev. Lutheran Church and the Ladies Guild in Otsego. On February 22, 1941 in Detroit, she married Wayne Hodell, who preceded her in death in 1973. Surviving are her nieces and nephews, Donald (Sandra) Rupprecht, Shirley (Gordon) Kraning, Jean Case, Howard Rupprecht, Robert Houghtaling, Hannalore Rupprecht, Kent Rupprecht, Martha (Andy) Haller and Walter (Joanne) Rupprecht Jr.; her husband’s nieces and nephews, Gail (Gary) Brophy, Joann Jannitt, Dorothy Brooks, Forrest Hodell Jr. and Betty Cumberword; a sister-in-law, Lucile Hodell. Preceding her in death were her husband; 2 brothers, Walter and Emil Rupprecht and twin sisters, Martha Bruder and Emma Houghtaling. Friends may meet with the family beginning 10:30 A.M. Monday at the Peace Ev. LutheranChurch, Otsego, until the time of the service at 12:00 Noon, Pastor Jason Thiel officiating. Burial will follow at Mountain Home Cemetery, Otsego. Contributions in memory of Ruby may be made to Peace Ev. Lutheran Church, the Ladies Guild or Wings of Hope Hospice.

Arthur John Bunce of North Muskegon, Michigan, died Sunday, March 23, 2008, in ByronCenter. Mr. Bunce was born November 14, 1924 in Kalamazoo to Winfield “Scott” and Cora (Tuttle) Bunce. Following graduation from Kalamazoo Public Schools he served in the United States Air Force during WWII. Art established and managed several Noble Shoe Stores in Michigan, Wisconsin, Indiana and Ohio. He lived the last 44 years in North Muskegon where he retired from “The Square” men’s clothing store. Art was a member of the Community United Methodist Church of North Muskegon. For several years, he volunteered at the Red Cross and the church food pantry. Art was a very generous man who enjoyed giving and making others feel special and occasionally walking their dogs. Surviving are his sister, Madelene Reynolds of Plainwell; several nieces and nephews; and many close friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Viola Reid; 4 brothers, Scotty, L.D., Marion and Bill; and several close friends. Friends may meet the family from 4 to 8 P.M. Wednesday at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego, where services will be held at 1:30 P.M. Thursday, Pastor Dean Wheeler officiating. Burial will follow at Maple GroveCemetery, Mattawan, with Military Honors conducted by V.F.W. Post #3030. Memorial contributions may be made to Faith Hospice at Trillium Woods or to the Muskegon Rescue Mission.
 

William Lyle Herrington

William Lyle Herrington
William Lyle Herrington of Otsego, Michigan, died Saturday March 22, 2008 in Plainwell. Mr. Herrington was born October 23, 1919 in Kalamazoo to John and Alma (Burgland) Herrington. He attended Kalamazoo Central High School. During WWII he proudly served his country in the United States Navy. During the battle of Guadalcanal he directed the forward guns of the USS San Francisco, which was the only cruiser in US Naval history to defeat a Japanese battleship. He also served on the USS Phoenix and the USS Bull. Bill also served during the Korean War. For many years he was employed with Ruud, Rheem, Essex and retired from Steketee’s in 1983. He was very inventive and could repair anything. Bill enjoyed fishing and playing Canasta. He was talented musically and played the harmonica, accordion and guitar. On February 4, 1950 in Angola, Indiana, he married Doris Landes, who survives. Also surviving are two sons, William Carl (Sharon) Herrington of Avon, Illinois, and Robert Alan (Michele) Herrington of Kalamazoo; 9 grandchildren, William E. (Stephanie), Alex (Emily), Elizabeth (James) Benge, John (Sara), Darran, Gregory, David, Austin, and Tyler; 5 great-grandsons, Benjamin, Timothy, Cody, Levi and Phisher; and a great-granddaughter soon to be born; 3 sisters-in-law, Lucille Herrington of Salem, OR , Hazel Cassell of Mattawan, Merle (Maynard) Knight of Plainwell; many nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were 3 brothers and 2 sisters, Karl, John, Leo, Ruth and Clara. Cremation has taken place. A Memorial Service will be held Thursday at 11:00 A.M. at Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego, Pastor Bill Walker officiating. Military Honors will be conducted by V.F.W. Post #3030. Burial of ashes at Fort Custer National Cemetery, Augusta, will be held at a later date. Contributions in memory of Bill may be made to In-House Hospice Solutions.

Allen K. “Al” Bruner of Kalamazoo, formerly of Plainell, passed away March 20, 2008 in FL. Al is survived by his wife, the former Ann Yunginger, their daughter Brenda Minor of Plainwell  and 3 grandchildren, Caitlyn Deemter and Sean & Ashley Bruner. He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Scott. A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 10, 2008 at 2:00 PM at the First Baptist Church in Otsego, Kerry Smalla officiating. Howard, E. “Rick” Mihlheim of Allegan, MI passed away Sunday, March 16, 2008 in Allegan. He was born on October 13, 1920 in Oelwein, Iowa to Lydia Garrels and Leonard Mihlheim. Rick was raised in Iowa and California. In California Rick and his dad were in the oil well drilling business. In 1940 Rick and his dad, Leonard, founded the Crescent Machine & Nipple Company in Allegan. Rick remained there for 46 years until his retirement in 1986. On November 21, 1939 he married his sweetheart from grade school, Jo Becker. Rick was very proud to be in the Marine Corps in World War II. He was a proud and faithful member of the Allegan Lions Club and obtained the 60 Year Member Monarch Chevron Award. Rick was active in the community, he was the Secretary for 25 years for the Mechanical Bank Collectors International, the longtime Secretary for the Men’s Monday Night Bowling League, a former 33rd Degree Mason, a Shriner, and a member of the AlleganUnitedMethodistChurch. Surviving are his wife of 68 years, Jo; his son Mark F. Mihlheim of Allegan; his granddaughter and her husband, Christine and Mac White, and 3 great-grandchildren, Justin, Jenna and Jayla White all of Conroe, TX. Friends may meet with his family from 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Tuesday at Winkel Funeral Home. Funeral and committal services will be held at the Allegan United Methodist Church on Wednesday at 11 A.M. with Pastor Bob Stover and Pastor Robert Pumfrey officiating. Immediately following the services all are invited to the church fellowship hall for refreshments. Private interment will follow at Hudson Corners Cemetery, Allegan. Memorial gifts may be made to the Allegan Lions Club or to the Allegan United Methodist Church.

Inez Swathwood of Portage, Michigan, died, Wednesday, March 12, 2008, in Plainwell. Mrs. Swathwood was born September 18, 1919, in Maywood, Illinois to Earle and Nellie (Sheldon) Wilson. In the 1930’s she was a waitress at Holly’s Grill in downtown Kalamazoo. On December 14, 1952 Inez and Lewis were married, and they enjoyed holding hands for all of their 56 years together. Later Inez was employed with Shakespeare Fishing and Tackle Co. Inez and Lewis moved to Florida to live for several years and then returned to Michigan to live in FifeLake before returning to the Kalamazoo area to be nearer their children. Inez’s favorite activities included doing craft projects and spending time with family. Surviving besides her devoted husband, Lewis, are 2 daughters, Barbara Henschel and Mary Sue (Dan) Hurlbut; 5 grandchildren, Terry (Debbie) Henschel, Gary (Beth) Henschel, Larry Henschel, Dan Hurlbut, Jr. and David (Marta) Hurlbut; 9 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Sue Carol (Swathwood) Wright and by a son-in-law, Marlynn Henschel. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at a later date. Contributions in memory of Inez may be made to Life Care Center of Plainwell.

Linda McEwen of Otsego, Michigan, passed away Monday, March 10, 2008 in Plainwell. Linda was born July 24, 1947, to Spencer and Millicent (Smith) Sherwood. Linda loved bowling, helping people and enjoyed traveling. She was a member of the Moose Lodge #345 and the Martin Lions Club. On April 15, 1966 she married James ‘Jim’ McEwen, who survives. Also surviving are her son, James Mikel (Deann) McEwen and their daughter, Amber Linn; her son, Duwayne (Cheryl) McEwen and their son, James; and her daughter, Eva (Rob) Beznoska and their daughters, Casey and Taylor; her siblings, Skip, Juanita, Zonna, Lynnette and Wanda; many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brother, Buddy. The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 P.M. Friday at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego, where funeral services will be held at 6:00 P.M. Cremation will follow.

Philip H. Bowe of Otsego passed away Saturday, March 8, 2008 in Otsego. He was born December 14, 1930 in Salisbury, Maryland the son of Howard and Anna (Culp) Bowe. He worked as a maintenance electrician for Allied Paper Corp. and Menasha Corp. retiring in 1996 and then worked part-time for Flexible Furniture. Philip loved his family, building wooden things like doll houses and toys for his grandchildren, working in the yard, rock collecting and making jewelry. He was an Elder at his church, Plainwell First Assembly of God. On August 30, 1950 in Salisbury, Maryland he married Shirley Wojciehowski who survives. Also surviving are his children, David Bowe of Otsego and Sharon Cremeans of Plainwell; a daughter-in-law, Christa Bowe of Otsego; 13 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; 2 sisters Sarah Taylor and Margaret Brimer; a brother Frank Bowe. He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Tim and a sister, Catherine. Friends may meet with his family from 3-5 and 7-9 P.M. Wednesday at Winkel Funeral Home, Funeral services will be held Thursday, 11 A.M. at the Plainwell First Assembly of God, Pastor Dave Alderman officiating. Interment will follow at MountainHomeCemetery, Otsego. Memorial gifts can be made to the Plainwell First Assembly of God.
