Milton E. Selby, Sr.

Milton E. Selby, Sr., of Otsego, died Tuesday, January 29, 2008 in Kalamazoo. Mr. Selby was born October 30, 1933 in Burnips to Benjamin and Josephine (Kelso) Selby and was a lifelong resident of the area. Milton enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, coon hunting, raising horses and mules and playing cards, especially poker.  In 1968 in Allegan he married Henrietta Keech, who preceded him in death on January 6, 2008. Also preceding him in death were his parents, a son Teddy Selby, who died in 1967 at 11 years old, siblings, Richard, Ray, Lawrence and Virginia Selby and a sister-in-law, Joanne Selby. Surviving are three daughters and three sons, Marilyn (Glen) Rice of Plainwell; David (Annette) Selby of Plainwell; Kelley (Alberto) Lopez of Otsego, Candace (Tom) Burress of Florida, Milton Eugene (Carol) Selby, Jr. of Otsego and James (Joy) Selby of Martin; a daughter-in-law, Peggy Selby of Otsego; 12 grandchildren, Jamie, David, Brandy, Ashlee, Tyler, Alberto, Benjamin, Kevin, Kyle, Jade, Breanna, Alexis and Jack; 2 great-grandchildren, Nathan and Brittany and another expected in July; siblings, Tom Selby, Bob Selby, Burn Selby, Lee Selby, Ruth Ann Schricker, all of Hamilton; Sister-in-law, Jean Selby of Hamilton; many nieces and nephews. Friends may meet the family from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 P.M. Friday at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego, where services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, Mr. Come Skinner officiating. Military Honors at Mountain Home Cemetery, Otsego will be conducted by VFW Post #3030. Contributions in memory of Milton may be made to the National Kidney Foundation.

Donna J. Jarvis

Donna J. (Kohlhoff) Jarvis of Allegan, Michigan, died Sunday, January 27, 2008, in Kalamazoo. Donna was born June 17, 1942 in Benton Harbor to Leo and Leola (Hawks) Kohlhoff. She had earned a scholarship at Interlochen Music Camp and a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration. For many years she had been employed as an operator with the phone company. She was an honorary member of the Ladies Aide and loved reading and knitting. Donna was a very quiet, intelligent woman who overcame many adversities and will be sorely missed by the following survivors: 4 daughters, Crystal (Michael) Brennan of Allegan, Michelle (John) Speck of Hamilton, Dawn (James) LaLonde of Clio and JoAnne (Mark) Giles of Allegan; 15 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; 1 brother and 3 sisters, Robert Kohlhoff of South Haven, Lois (Larry) Maxwell of Bangor, Joyce (John) Watts of Allegan and Jean Renzelman of Pueblo, CO; many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by an infant daughter, JoAnne. Friends may meet the family from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 P.M. Wednesday at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 P.M. Thursday at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Allegan, Pastor Ron Kruse officiating. Cremation will follow. Joan B. Kramnic

Joan B. Kramnic of Kalamazoo, Michigan, passed away Sunday, January 27, 2008 in Alamo. Joan was born September 18, 1940 in Duluth, MN, the daughter of Louis and Esther (Thompson) Kramnic. She was a 1960 graduate of Whitehall-Yearling High School in Columbus, OH and was an Art major at Ohio State University in Columbus. While living in Washington, D. C., she became a Master Engraver. She loved dance and studied tap, Ballet, modern jazz, ballroom and Folk. Other interests include traveling to countries including Egypt, Greece and Italy to visit the ancient ruins. Joan was an avid cat fancier and belonged to the Mid Michigan Cat Fancier Association. She showed her beloved cats in Michigan shows for many years, making champions of many. She had completed a full length play and children’s book and was working on a musical comedy. She was preceded in death by her parents, and in 1999 a sister, Carol Yingling. Surviving are a brother, David Kramnic of Kalamazoo, a sister-in-law, Janice Arlington of Kendal; nieces, Cheryl Yingling, Tina Hochstetler and Tonya Hochstetler; a dear friend, Carol Stezowski. Friends may meet with her family from 10:00 AM until the time of service at 11:00 AM Wednesday at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, 1747 W. Milham, Kalamazoo, Rev. Paul Nuechterleine officiating. Interment will be at Kendall Cemetery. Arrangements by the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego, MI. Donations in her memory may be made to the Susan G. Komen Foundation or Hospice of SW Michigan.

Dawn K. Riley

Dawn K. Riley of Otsego, passed away Wednesday, January 23, 2008 at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio. Dawn was born May 22, 1964 in Kalamazoo.  Dawn was the former owner of Debt Relief of Michigan and the owner-operator of Blimpies in downtown Kalamazoo. In high school, she played softball and later enjoyed watching football, basketball and hockey. On August 23, 2003, in Pullman, she married Robert Riley who survives. Also surviving are 1 son and 2 daughters, Scott Stephenson, Heather Stephenson and Kelsey Culver; 3 step-children from a former marriage, Holly Culver, Jessica Cope and Ross Culver; her mother, Jill Garrison; a step-brother, Charles Garrison and step-sister, Sandra McDonald; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her father, Glenn Garrison in 1993. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, February 9, 2008 at the Alamo Community Church, Rev. Larry D. Penny, Jr. of Otsego, Michigan , died suddenly Tuesday, January 22, 2008, at his home. Larry was born December 5, 1966 in Millington, Tennessee, to Larry Sr. and Joyce (Conley) Penny. He was a 1985 graduate of Plainwell High School, did his Army basic training at Ft. Dix, NJ, AIT training at Ft. Benning, GA, and received additional military training, including a PLDC and served as an Assistant Platoon Sergeant and Motor Pool Sergeant. Larry loved hunting, fishing and following NASCAR racer, Jeff Gordon. He was a good father, son and brother. He had many friends and loved helping others. Surviving are his fiancée, Penny Kawakami of Otsego; two sons, Ethan Penny of Otsego and Sean Penny and his fiancée Ashley Rustenholtz of Kalamazoo, his mother and father, Joyce and James Wilson of Sioux City, Iowa; his father, Larry (Betty) Penny, Sr. of Allegan; his step-father, Fred Misner of Plainwell; his grandmother, Bonnie Schlenker of S. Sioux City, Nebraska; his fiancee’s mother, Aurora Kawakami of Otsego; siblings, Steve (Kathy) Penny of Olivet, Jackie (Scott) Delpiere of Allegan, Greg (fiancée Teresa) Penny of Otsego, Michelle (Scott) Root of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Marsha (Dustin) Craft of Merrill, Iowa and Melinda (Chris) Johnson of Sioux City, Iowa; step-brother and 2 step-sisters, Kenny (Amy) Wrobleski of Otsego, Cheryl Wrobleski of Kalamazoo and Tina Biesbrock of Allegan; many nieces and nephews. DeVon D. Culver
DeVon D. Culver passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 20, 2008 in Wayland with his family at his side. DeVon was born June 26, 1928 in Mishawauka, IN, the son of Willard and Lillian (Kruger) Culver. He started working at KVP Sutherland in Parchment, MI in 1946 at the age of 18 until his retirement in 1988 after 42 years. On October 2, 1948 in Kalamazoo, he married the former Irene Bodnar. In their younger years, he enjoyed taking Irene and their children to church on Sundays, going to drive-in movies and Sunday drives to get ice cream. DeVon would do anything for his wife and children without complaining. He also loved walking, bowling, dancing and getting together with family for holidays, playing games with family and friends, meeting and talking to people and making new friends wherever he went. He won several trophies in shuffleboard and for Christmas decorations. DeVon was a Boy Scout leader and was a member of V.F.W. Post #3030. He enjoyed collecting eagles and the American flag. He is survived by his wife, Irene; a son, David (Barb) Culver of Bangor; 3 daughters, Jaci Wilson of Otsego, Nancy (John) Fahrne of Bradley, Pat (Walt) Schmitt of Otsego; 9 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; a daughter-in-law, Cindy Culver of Richland; 2 brothers-in-law, Jim Bodnar and Gene Mays; 3 sisters-in-law, Donna Bodnar, Grace Bodnar and Sharon Bodnar; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, James Culver; an infant sister, Virginia Culver; a brother, Bill Culver and a grandson-in-law Davey Westerfield. Friends may meet with the family Wednesday, January 23, 2008 from 10:30 a.m. until the memorial service time of 11:30 a.m. at Winkel Funeral Home, Rev. Jack Doorlag, officiating. Robert “Bob” Garrison of Alamo Township died Thursday, January 17, 2008, in Plainwell. Mr. Garrison was born March 14, 1922 in Kalamazoo to Charles and Lulu (Leversee) Garrison and was a lifelong resident of the area. During WWII Bob served his country in the United States Army. For over 40 years he was employed with Georgia Pacific Paper Co. On May 17, 1947 he married Edna who died in 2006. He was also preceded in death by a grandson, Chris Pickron, and a brother, Glen Garrison. Surviving are two daughters, Sheryl (John) Pickron of Otsego and Karen (Dick) Smith of Grand Rapids; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a sister, Eva Rector of Alamo; six nieces and a nephew. Friends may meet the family from 2 to 4 P.M. Sunday and again from 10 to 11 A.M. Monday at the Winkel Funeral Home where services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Monday. Burial will follow at AlamoCenterCemetery. Contributions in memory of Bob may be made to Hospice Care of Southwest Michigan.

Fritz O. Lester of Plainwell, Michigan passed away January 15, 2008 in Plainwell. Mr. Lester was born December 7, 1924 in Chicago, Illinois. Fritz was an accomplished engineer, having worked for Brunswick in Muskegon and retiring from Parker-Hannifin of Otsego in 1991. He loved golf, the out-of-doors and soccer, and was a very kind and giving, intelligent and self-made person. Surviving are his wife, the former Clarabelle Walling; three children, Wolfgang Lester of Iowa, Martin Lester of Rockford and Heidi (Thomas) Brooks of Kalamazoo; four step-children, Sue (Oren) Herbert of Kendall, Mike Lewis of Plainwell, Lori (Norm) Post of Chelsea and Karen (Gordon) Helms of Delton; four grandchildren, Roland Lester, Kristy Lester, Dustin Lester and Adam Lester; step-grandchildren, Randy, Jenny, Tiffany, Varsil, Michael, Brenda, Amanda, Michelle, Billy, Chelsea and Michael; several great-grandchildren. In keeping with his wishes cremation has taken place. Friends may meet the family from 6 to 8 P.M. Friday at Winkel Funeral Home where memorial services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday. Raymond L. Fuller of Otsego, Michigan, passed away Sunday, January 13, 2008 at his home. Mr. Fuller was born January 25, 1938 in Plainwell to Ervin and Ethel (Fletcher) Fuller and was a lifelong resident of the area. Ray was an excellent carpenter and retired after many years in the building trades. He especially enjoyed cars and his animals. On July 4, 1989 in Otsego he married Bonnie (Fleeman) who survives. Also surviving are a son and a daughter, Rodney (Doretha Sparks) Fuller of Plainwell and Lorica Trivetta of Iowa; a step-daughter, Mindi Oetman of Allegan; four sisters, Rosie Oetman of Allegan, Pat (Jim) Phillips of Plainwell, Jenny (Ron) Pillars of Otsego and Carol (Dale) Wiley of Allegan; his former wife, Paulette Fuller of Hopkins; many grandchildren, cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and by two sisters and a brother, Beatrice Syers, Donna Stewart and Bud Fuller. In keeping with his wishes cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 A.M. Thursday at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego, with Pastor Lester Warner officiating. Contributions in Ray’s memory may be made to Wings of Hope Hospice.

Cecelia A. Seel of Plainwell, Michigan, passed away Sunday January 13, 2008 in Plainwell. Mrs. Seel was born November 22, 1910 in Benton Harbor to Harry and Charlotte (Buursma) Miller and had resided in Benton Harbor until 1964. She then lived in Arizona before moving to the Otsego-Plainwell area in 1996. From 1952 to 1956 she was employed with Heath Company of Benton Harbor. She was a member of St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church of Benton Harbor. Surviving are a son, Richard (Jeanne) Ueck, Sr. of Plainwell; two grandchildren, Richard (Dawn) Ueck, Jr. of Plainwell and Patricia Ueck of Otsego; two great-grandchildren, Arthur and Hillary Ueck; and one nephew, Tom (Josie) Taube of Kalamazoo. Cecelia was preceded in death by two husbands, Arthur Ueck in 1951 and Elmo Seel in 1981, and by her sister, Leona Taube in 2007. The family will receive friends on Wednesday beginning at 10:00 A.M. at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego,

where funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Pastor Jason Thiel officiating. Graveside services at Crystal Springs Cemetery, Benton Harbor, will be held at 3:30 P.M. Wednesday. Contributions in memory of Cecelia may be made to Peace Ev. Lutheran Church, 805 S. Wilmott St., Otsego, 49078.
