Irene E. Baker
Irene Baker of Otsego passed away Thursday, August 30, 2007. Irene was born February 25, 1913. On September 5, 1931 in Wallon Lake, MI she married Leland Baker who preceded her in death in 1983. Irene worked for Hinkle’s Bakery in Otsego for over 25 years. She enjoyed knitting, reading and cross stitch. Surviving are her children, Phil (Paula) Baker of Otsego and Sharon (Dean) Myers of Allegan; 3 grandchildren, Troy (Janet) Baker, Lisa (Jon) Caldwell and Kelli (Matt) Drobny; 7 great-grandchildren, Destiny, Morgan, Chase, Jonathan, Trent, Noah and Marissa. She was preceded in death by a son Gerald ‘Jerry’ Baker in 1998 and Virginia Keeler in 1993, who was like a sister. Also surviving is Virginia’s daughter Lee Ann Clements of Flagstaff, AZ and her daughter Katie. Visitation will be held from 10-11 AM Saturday at the Winkel Funeral Home in Otsego, followed by a service at 11:00 A.M. with Pastor Don Ray officiating. Burial will follow at Mt.HomeCemetery, Otsego. Contributions in memory of Irene may be made to Southern Care Hospice.

Wilburn D. Spitzner
Wilburn “Bill” Spitzner of Gobles passed away Wednesday, August 29, 2007 in Otsego. Mr. Spitzner was born January 29, 1923 in Leadford, IL the son of Walter and Lela (Love) Spitzner. Wilburn was a supervisor at KVP Sutherland retiring after 36 years; he was a member of the VFW Posts at Hopkins and Baldwin and was a honorary member of Otsego Post #3030. He also enjoyed woodworking. Wilburn is survived by his children; Lorraine (John) Maag, Larry (Patricia) Spitzner of Otsego, Terri Spitzner of Gobles and Tom (Tammi) Spitzner of Coldwater; 9 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; a brother James (Bobbi) Spitzner of Florida and a sister Wanda (Don) Chase of Portage. He was preceded in death by a sister Floris Sampley. Visitation was held from 10-11 AM followed by a funeral service Friday, August 31, 2007 at 11:00 A.M. at the First Congregational Church of Otsego, Pastor Don Ray officiating. Burial of ashes will follow at a later date at Ft.CusterNationalCemetery. Donations in memory of Wilburn may be made to Wings of Hope Hospice.

Floyd Hatfield Jr.

Floyd  Hatfield Jr.
Floyd Hatfield Jr. of Otsego passed away Wednesday, August 29, 2007 in Otsego. Mr. Hatfield was born May 16, 1937 in Matewan, West Virginia, the son of Floyd and Cordie Hatfield. He was a self-employed metal finisher. On September 18, 2005 in Orangeville, he married Susan Conley, who survives. Also surviving are his children, Tammy Hartman, Kim Person, Todd Hatfield, Zach (Sarah) Hatfield, all of Otsego, Tyler (Julie) Hatfield of Orangeville, Brad Hatfield of East Pointe; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Darlene and 2 sons, Ben Arthur Hatfield and Rodney Wayne Hatfield. The family would like to thank Heartland Hospice, especially Linda Jacobs for their help and support. There was no visitation. A funeral service was held Friday, August 31, 2007 at 2:00 PM at the Pentacostal Church of Christ in Orangeville, Pastor Mike Risner, officiated. Interment followed at OakhillCemetery, Orangeville.

Eugene W. Rector
Eugene “Gene” W. Rector of Alamo passed away Tuesday, August 28, 2007 at Rose Arbor Hospice in Kalamazoo. Gene was born August 18, 1922 in Kalamazoo, MI the son of Walter and Vera (Youngs) Rector.  He was a graduate of KalamazooCentralHigh School and had attended MSU. He had been employed as a parts inspector many years by Fuller Mfg. and Eaton Group and he also farmed while working at Eaton. Gene served 30 years in the local government as a Kalamazoo County Commissioner and had served on the AlamoTownship zoning board and as a trustee, was the tax assessor for many years, served 20 years as the Alamo Township Supervisor and helped develop the AlamoTownshipPark. He worked as an aide to two state senators, Bob and Jack Welborn in Lansing. He was also a Trustee and Deacon at Alamo Congregational Church and was a current member of Otsego First Congregational Church. He was a Mason, a Shriner and was a secretary with the Oshtemo Grange and the Kalamazoo County Farm Bureau. Gene was also a leader for the N.W. Alamo 4-H Club where he taught leathercraft. He enjoyed traveling, photographing barns, gardening, leathercrafting, cooking, baking and making greeting cards on his computer. Gene married Eva Garrison on April 20, 1945 in Alamo twp and together they raised four wonderful girls. He is survived by his wife Eva, by his daughters; Phyllis (James) Gary of Battle Creek, Nancy (Roger) Zeluff of Cooper, Patricia (Mark) Chapman and Gail (Michael) VanderWeele both of Alamo. Gene is also survived by 9 grandchildren and by 8 great grandchildren, his sister Arlene Loomis of MD and by several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother Hilden Rector. Cremation has taken place. On Saturday, September 8, 2007 at the First Congregational Church of Otsego, the family will greet friends from 10:00 to11:00 AM at which time a memorial service will be held with Pastor William Walker and Rev. David Youngs officiating. Memorials can be made to Rose Arbor Hospice or the AlamoTownshipPark.

Ronald M. Kennedy of Otsego passed away Saturday, August 4, 2007 in Otsego. Ronald was born January 3, 1949 in Oscoda, MI the son of Harold and Verna (Baker) Kennedy. He had been employed as a merchant mariner for many years before beginning work at his current job at Circulation Promoters where he was a top salesman. Ronald loved children, he enjoyed their company and liked to make them laugh. He loved the outdoors and cared for animals. Ronald was a man with an outgoing personality and could easily talk with anyone; this trait helped him connect with children and was a foundation for his success at his job. Ronald is survived by 2 sisters and 2 brothers, Carol Ann (Daniel) Seekman of Otsego, Kimberly (Michael) Fullerton of Oscoda, William (Vicki) Kennedy of Kalamazoo and David (Joann) Kennedy of Gobles. Also surviving are his aunts and uncles, Pauline (Dan) Welburn of The Villages, FL, Donna (Robert) Graham of Sterling Heights, Dale Kennedy of Oscoda and Larry Kennedy of Detroit, several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews and very special to him, his great nephew Anthony Lee Seekman, and by many cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents. A memorial service will be held on Friday at 11:00AM at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego. Burial of the cremated remains will take place at a later date. Memorials can be made to the charity of your choice.

Geraldine M. Storbeck
Geraldine M. “Gerri” Storbeck passed away Thursday, August 2, 2007 in Kalamazoo. Gerri was born January 22, 1931 in Flint, the daughter of John and Geraldine (Edwards) Goodman. For over 30 years she was a member and the Financial Secretary at the West Vienna United Methodist Church; Gerri was a life member of Order of the Eastern Star, Mt. Morris Chapter; she crocheted over 200 pairs of mittens for the Kalamazoo Ministry with Community at the Park Place Assisted Living Community where she lived for the past 3 years. On December 12, 1953 she married Clayton Storbeck, who preceded her in death on November 18, 1989. Surviving are her sons, Mike (Debbie) Storbeck of Kalamazoo and Matt (Sherri) Storbeck of Otsego; 3 grandchildren, Sarah (Eli) Kendra of Aurora, IL, Rebecca (Jonathan) Thompson of Portage and Justin Storbeck of Otsego; sisters, Joann Alexander of Mt.Morris and Janice Davis of Linden, MI; and several nieces. Friends may meet with the family from 10 to 12 Noon Monday at the West Vienna United Methodist Church with the funeral service at 12 Noon, The Rev. Billie Lou Gillespie officiating. Burial will follow at the WestViennaTownshipCemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Gerri may be made to the West Vienna United Methodist Church Memorial Fund. Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego is serving the family.
