Jerome H. Berner

Jerome H. ‘Jerry’ Berner of Portage, Michigan, passed away Tuesday, January 30, 2007 in Florida. He is now with his Lord to join his wife Dorothy and his dog Fritz. Jerry was born July 22, 1935 in Mishawaka, IN, the son of Hillary and Mary Catherine (Ter-Bush) Berner. He was a 1953 graduate of Otsego High School. From 1954 to 1957, he served in the U. S. Marine Corps and was honor guard at the Tomb of the Unknowns at Quantico, Virginia. He was employed with KVP Sutherland and as a foreman at General Motors in Kalamazoo, retiring in 1999. Since his retirement, he had spent his winters in Fort Myers Beach, FL. Jerry loved being with his grandchildren and families and enjoyed being on the beach and fishing in Florida. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy on October 7, 2002 also 2 sisters, Rosemary Anson and Mary Catherine Folkert. Surviving are his daughter, Ann Berner of Fort Myers Beach, his son, Kevin (Michelle) Berner of Battle Creek; his step-daughter, Barbara (Chris) Madura of Grand Rapids; 6 grandchildren, Jason, Scott, Tiffany, Candace, Jarrett and Brooke; 3 brothers, William (Geraldine) Berner of Otsego, Philip (Joyce) Berner of Otsego, Frederick (Brenda) Berner of Kalamazoo; many nieces and nephews.  He will be missed by his friends and neighbors in Florida and Michigan and his cat Cally ‘Alley Cat’. Friends may meet the family on Tuesday from 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego, where a memorial service will be held Wednesday at 11:00 AM, Pastor Philip R. Griffin officiating. Interment of cremains will be at Mount Ever-Rest Memorial Park in Kalamazoo. Memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army of Kalamazoo.

Timothy T. Hemmer

Timothy T. Hemmer of Otsego Township, passed away Monday, January 29, 2007 at his home. Tim was born March 11, 1966 in Kalamazoo, the son of James Walter and Patricia (Schwaas) Hemmer. He was self-employed as a landscape gardener. Surviving are his daughter Melissa and her mother, Catherine Hemmer; his parents of Portage; 7 sisters and brothers, Virginia (Tom) Harmsen of Kalamazoo, Stephen (Cherine) Hemmer of Paw Paw, Elizabeth Lyman of Kalamazoo, Constance Hemmer of Las Vegas, NV, Christopher  and Matthew Hemmer both of Paw Paw, Linda (Kevin) Sarratt of Portage. There will be no visitation or service. Burial has taken place at Mountain Home Cemetery, Otsego.

David C. Butler

David C. Butler of Otsego, Michigan, died Saturday, January 27, 2007. David was born September 16, 1967 in Plainwell. For many years David was a trim carpenter, recently he became employed as a sales representative with American Campgrounds and was a top salesman. Surviving are his wife, Jennifer Butler of Otsego; a daughter, Olivia Gabriel Butler and a stepson, Dray Tyler Jones. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 P.M. Friday, February 2, 2007, at the Allegan Wesleyan Church. Contributions in memory of David may be made to the Allegan Wesleyan Church.

Asenath L. Huff

Asenath L. Huff of Kalamazoo, Michigan, passed away Friday, January 26, 2007 at the Upjohn Nursing Home. Mrs. Huff was born August 22, 1918 in Otsego to Douglas and Beulah (Allen) Burss. On May 3, 1940 in Plainewll she married James Huff who preceded her in death in 2004. Surviving are her children James Huff of Zephyrhills, FL and Richard (Polly) Huff of Kalamazoo; 4 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren; nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, and her siblings Edna Mahieu and Avery Burss. Asenath loved her family, her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Friends may meet the family from  6 to 8  P.M. Tuesday at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego, where a funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Wednesday, Mr. William Rose officiating. Burial  will follow at Mountain Home Cemetery, Otsego. Contributions in memory of Asenath may be made to Loaves and Fishes or the charity of your choice.

Thomas J. Collick, III

Thomas J. Collick, III, of Plainwell, Michigan, passed away Friday, January 26, 2007 at Borgess Hospital in Kalamazoo. Mr. Collick was born October 24, 1924 in Otsego to Thomas and Rose (Hawkins) Collick and was a lifelong resident of the area. Tom owned and operated Collick Milk Hauling for 50 years. He loved his family and enjoyed working with wood. On October 28, 1944 in Otsego he married Bonnie Ellsworth who survives. Also surviving are his children Tom (Linda Beattie) Collick, Ron (Lenna) Collick, Connie (Ken) Bushouse all of Otsego, Lonnie (Martha) Collick and his daughter-in-law Elaine Collick both of Plainwell; 11 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren; siblings Richard “Hank” (Betty) Collick, Marie Leonard, Peggy Elben, Betty (Ted) Woodhams and Frances Canfield; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his son Gerald and by his siblings Bill Collick, Doreen Fuller and Edward Powless. Cremation has taken place. Friends may meet the family from 4 to 6 P.M. Monday at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego, where a memorial service will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Tuesday, Rev. James A. Yerke officiating. Burial of ashes will follow at Mountain Home Cemetery, Otsego. Contributions in memory of Tom may be made to the American Heart Association or to the Michigan Parkinson Foundation.

Curtis O. Edson

Curtis O. Edson of Battle Creek (formerly of Otsego) passed away Wednesday, January 24, 2007 in Battle Creek. Mr. Edson was born September 3, 1945 in Otsego to Harlie and Mary (Kirkland) Edson and was a lifelong resident of the area. Curtis grew up in Otsego and attended school there. During the Vietnam War he served his country with the U.S. Marines Corp. He was a ham and citizens band radio operator and enjoyed bowling. For many years he lived at the Stepping Stone Adult Foster Care Home in Battle Creek. Surviving are a sister-in-law, Doris Edson of Allegan; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, and by two sisters and two brothers, Doris Harris, Ruby Nichols, Harlie Edson and Elton Edson. Friends may meet the family from 6 to 8 P.M. Friday at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego. Graveside services at Mountain Home Cemetery, Otsego, will be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, Pastor Timothy Secord officiating. Military Honors will be conducted by V.F.W. Post #3030. Contributions in memory of Curtis may be made to Christian Neighbors.

Sue Ann Currie

Sue Ann Currie of Allegan, Michigan, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Sunday, January 21, 2007. Sue was born September 25, 1957 in Plainwell to James and Sharon (VanPatten) Leonard and was a lifelong resident of the area. For over 20 years she had been employed at Tru-Heat in Allegan. She served in the Army Reserves during the time of the Gulf War. Sue’s hobbies included gardening, golf, bowling and shopping. As a child she enjoyed horses and competing in horse shows. Sue attended the Merson Church. On June 21, 1996 she married David Currie, who survives. Also surviving are three daughters, Abby (Jeremy) Richardson of Bradley, Lisa Schwarz of Byron Center and Nichole Heckman of Allegan; three grandchildren, Kennedy, Jacqueline and Trinity; her parents, Sharon Nichols of Seeley Lake, Montana and James (Janice) Leonard of Plainwell; three brothers, Mike (Julie) Leonard of Allegan, Randy (Annette) Leonard of Kalamazoo and William (Susan) Nichols of Moses Lake, WA; two step-sisters, Deb (Dennis) Merlau of Delton, Sheri (Joe)  Fountain of Hampton, VA; a step-brother, Larry (Joyce) Zuiderveen of Otsego; her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Robert and Shirley Currie; two sisters-in-law and two brothers-in-law, Karen Dyer, Robert II (Tami) Currie and Roger (Juli) Currie and Diana (John ) Buchin, all of Plainwell; several aunts and uncles; many nieces and nephews; and her dog, Bud. Friends may meet the family from 1 to 2 P.M. Wednesday at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego, where services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Rev. Robert E. Cosby officiating. James H. Howe

James H. ‘Jim’ Howe of Plainwell, Michigan, (formerly of Galesburg) passed away Sunday, January 21, 2007 in Plainwell. Mr. Howe was born February 13, 1937 in Otsego to Aaron and Esther (Johnson) Howe and had been a lifelong resident of the area. For 20 years he was employed as a machinist with Durametallic (now Flowserve), retiring in 1979. Jim liked cars and trucks, enjoyed watching the Discovery and Animal Planet channels and listening to country music. Surviving are his first wife, Patricia Pullin; three sons, Randy (Pam) Howe of Dorr, Ron (Debora) Howe of Portage and Tom (Sally) Howe of Paw Paw; his grandchildren, Bradley (Andrea), April, Bruce, Michelle, Samantha, Chris and Jason; eight great-grandchildren, Ethan, Bayleigh, Kelci, Dustin, Tristan, Ariana, Gage and Brayton; his siblings, Barbara (Bob) Rietkerk of Kalamazoo, Joanne Holmes of Alamo, his twin brother John (Donna) Howe of Grand Junction, Janet (Ray) Penn of Kalamazoo, David Howe of Las Vegas, Kenneth (Phyllis) Howe of Alamo and Jerry Howe of Plainwell; many nieces, nephews and cousins; his step-children, Elizabeth (John) Pencost, Deborah (Bryon) Boley, Stephen (Suzanne) Soncrant and Sharon (Kenneth) Boley and their families; all his friends at Life Care Center of Plainwell; and his faithful friend and companion, his dog Luke. He was preceded in death by his wife, Myrna (Soncrant) Howe in August of 2006, a brother, Harold Howe, and a sister, Noreen O’Dell. Friends may meet the family from 6 to 8 P.M. Wednesday at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego, where services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Thursday, Crista Simmons of Life Care Ministries officiating. Cremation will follow. William J. Peacock

William J. Peacock of Kalamazoo, Michigan, passed away Thursday, January 18, 2007 at his home. William was born February 3, 1945 in Kalamazoo to Thomas and Ritchel (Rice) Peacock. For 3 years he worked at the Satellite Restaurant, William worked for Brown Paper for about a year and worked in welder-maintenance (W.E.M.R) for General Motors for 30 years. He was very mechanical and able to fix anything. He loved helping others at a moments notice. William enjoyed antique tractors and tractor shows;  was a member of the Koi Club in Grand Rapids and had been a Jr. Marksman at the White Oaks Gun Club. On August 9, 1970 in Scottville he married Marlene Talsma who survives. Also surviving are his children; Donald (Rhonda) Peacock of Terre Haute, IN, Ronald (Stacy) Peacock of Alamo, Cheryl Peacock (Mary Muliett) of Battle Creek and Jesse (Shana) Larrabee of Allegan; 3 grandchildren; 1 great-grandson; a brother Robert (Pamela) Peacock of TN and a sister Nancy Jean (Larry) Williams of Modesto, CA; several nieces and nephews. Friends may meet the family on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 P.M. at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego. Cremation will follow. Contributions in memory of William may be made to Borgess VNA and Hospice Services.

 Mrs. Willie C. Cooker of Alamo Township passed away Friday, January 12, 2007 at her home. Mrs. Cooker was born April 28, 1921 in Lindale, Georgia. Willie enjoyed St. Margaret’s Friday night bingo and crocheting afghans. Surviving are 1 son, Randy and wife Terri Cooker; 5 grandchildren; siblings, Eileen, Betty, Maxine, Billy & Connoly; several cousins and nieces and nephews. Willie was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph in 2004. Friends may meet the family from 4 to 6 P.M.Monday at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego. Cremation will follow.
