Imogene ‘Gene’ Wentland of Kalamazoo, MI (formerly of Allegan) went home to be with her Lord on Wednesday, March 3, 2010. Imogene was born October 26, 1920, in Wayland, MI to Raymond and Ruth (St. Martin) Newton. She taught school for 2 years and then retired to raise a family. For 32 years she taught Sunday School in the children’s division at the United Methodist Church in Allegan and also helped to plan and teach Vacation Bible School for many years. She planned and directed many programs for special occasions and holidays. Imogene also worked as a private tutor and retired from Allegan Public School after driving school bus for 11 years. Together with her husband, Ben, she owned and operated Wentlands Car Wash, Bait and Tackle Shop in Allegan for 11 years. She loved working with children, gardening, hand work and was also an avid bird watcher. Most recently she was a member of the Oak Grove Bible Church in Alamo. On October 3, 1975 she married Benedict Wentland, who survives. Also surviving are a daughter and her husband, Candace and Fred Hogue of Gobles; a granddaughter, Lorie L. Panico of Tucson, AZ; a grandson, Marcus Hogue of Bartlett, IL; one sister, Fern Ingold of Alamo; a step-son, Kenneth (Mary) Wentland of Grand Junction; a step-daughter, Karen L. Wentland of Columbus, OH; one step-grandson, Jonathon (JoAnn) Wentland of Poulsbo, WA; two step great-granddaughters, Kaitlyn and Dalaney Wentland of Poulsbo, WA; a cousin, Howard Norton of Otsego; many nieces, nephews, cousins and their families. Preceding her in death were her parents; her first husband, John E. Sorenson in 1974; her daughter, Sharon Kay DenBesten in 1969; a sister and her husband, June and Harold Farnum. The family will receive friends on Friday March 5, 2010, beginning at 1:30 PM at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego, where services will be held at 2:30 P.M., Hospice Chaplain Mrs. Monica L. Tyler officiating. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery, Allegan. Contributions in memory of Imogene may be made to In House Hospice.
