Tom A. Main

Tom Main of Hopkins died Wednesday, October 31, 2007 in Kalamazoo. Tom was born July 28, 1954 in Hastings to (Lawrence and Barbara Main) and was a lifelong resident of the area. He had served his country in the U.S. Army. For many years he was employed as a machinist with Bill-Mac Corp. Tom was a member of the National Barrel Horse Association. On April 1, 1979 in Otsego he married Tammy Whip, who survives. Also surviving are his children, Tommy Jr. (Amanda) Main and Shilo (Jamie) Arndt both of Hamilton, Corey Main and his fiancée Tiffany of Kentwood and Cody Main of Hopkins; five grandchildren; his mother and step-father, Barbara and Jim Faust; three brothers and a sister, Lawrence “Ed” (Zarlene) Main, June (Ron) Stall, Robert (Kathy) Main and Steven (Abbie) Main; sister in law Diane; several nieces and nephews and many friends. Tom was preceded in death by his brother, Ronald, in 1981, and his father in 1998. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 A.M.Saturday, November 10, 2007 at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego. Burial of ashes will follow at MountainHomeCemetery, Otsego. Contributions in Tom’s memory may be made to the National Barrel Horse Association.

Ann H. Berner

Ann H. Berner of Ft. Myers Beach, FL (formerly of Portage) died Monday, October 29, 2007 in Ft.Myers, FL. Ann was born July 10, 1968 in Saginaw, MI, the daughter of Jerome and Dorothy (Chapman) Berner. Ann had attended PortageCentralHigh School and she was employed with Kalamazoo Imports and at Publix of Ft. Myers. Ann enjoyed her cats, shopping, playing poker, walks on the beach and going to the casino. Surviving are her son Scott Jerome; brother and his wife Kevin and Michelle Berner and their children Jarrett and Brooke of Battle Creek; her half sister and husband Barbara and Chris Madura and their children Jason, Tiffany and Candace of Grand Rapids; her very close friend, Steve Sutter of Kalamazoo; several aunts, uncles and cousins. Ann was preceded in death by her parents. Visitation will take place on Thursday from 3 to 4 and from 6 to 8 pm at Winkel Funeral Home where services will be held on Friday at 11am with Pastor Philip R. Griffin officiating. Burial will be held at a later time at Mt.EverestCemetery in Kalamazoo. Memorial gifts may be made to the Kalamazoo Humane Society.

Richard V. Brewer

Richard V. Brewer of Otsego, Michgian, died Friday, October 26, 2007 in Otsego. Dick was born August 6, 1918 in Plainwell, MI, the son of Richard and Florence (Pike) Brewer. For 23 years he was employed with Parker-Hannifin Corp. as director of purchasing. He enjoyed golfing and loved to fly airplanes. Surviving are his wife, the former Blanche Leversee, whom he married March 13, 1958 in Plainwell; a daughter, Sandra (Richard) Kurtz of Westminster, CO; a son, Richard (Connie) Brewer of Plainwell; 4 step-children, Areitta (Norman) Jacobs of Otsego, Cecil (Shirley) Conner of Delton, David (Wendy) Conner of Plainwell, Barbara (Bruce) Holzhausen of Owosso. Cremation has taken place. Richard’s family will greet friends at a visitation on Wednesday, October 31, 2007 at 2:00 PM at the Otsego Community Center (Scout House), 410 E. Orleans St., Otsego, MI. In keeping with Richard’s wishes, donations in his memory may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association to honor his wife Blanche.

Theron Caswell

 Theron ‘Butch’ Caswell of Otsego, Michigan, went to be with his Lord on Thursday, October 25, 2007. Butch was born July 19, 1942 in Parchment. He was a 1960 graduate of Gull Lake High School. Butch was a Master Clock Maker and repairman.  He loved being with his family, especially his grandchildren and visiting with friends. He was a peaceful, gentle man and enjoyed nature, flowers, cats and collecting antiques. Butch was a very giving man and made weekly trips to the Christian Neighbors Food Pantry. On November 15, 1963 in Alamo he married Carolyn Bierema, who survives. Also surviving are 2 daughters and their husbands, Vicki and Dale Hawkins and their children, Alexandra and Nolan of DeWitt, Jenny and Brian Smith and their son Noah of Ponte Vedra, FL; 3 brothers and their wives, Tom and Carol Caswell of South Boardman, Steve and Janice Caswell of Allegan, Carl and Barb Caswell of Oregon; several nieces and nephews. His daughter, Amy (Caswell) Himes, preceded him in death in 1998. Cremation has taken place. His family will receive friends at their home on Saturday from 1-4 P.M. Memorial contributions may be made to the Christian Neighbors.

Margery Clare Sweetland

Margery Clare Sweetland of Otsego, Michigan, passed away Sunday, October 21, 2007, in Kalamazoo. Mrs. Sweetland was born September 30, 1929 in Plainwell to Rube and Frances (Gerry) Tubbs and had been a lifelong resident of the area. Surviving are a daughter and three sons, Deborah Sisto of Allegan, Michael Ahlberg of Hanover Park, IL, Gerry and Lauren and grandson Jeremy Sweetland of Otsego and Larry Jr. ‘Gus’ and Mary Sweetland of Portage; a sister, Frances ‘Zeb’ Klumpp of Otsego; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Larry Sweetland in 1972, and by four sisters and a brother, Betty Hofacker, Joan Salters, Willard Tubbs, Sandy Tubbs and Mary Jean Anderson. Cremation has taken place and there will be no service. John H. Latta Sr.

John H. Latta Sr. of Paw Paw passed away October 16, 2007, in Kalamazoo. John was born April 3, 1952 in Delton to Homer and Helen (Caldwell) Latta. For many years he was employed with Metal Components Inc. in Wyoming, MI, and for the last few years he was a truck driver and really loved the cross country trips. Surviving are a daughter and a son, Angel (Jason) Scott of Texas and John (Carla) Latta, Jr. of Plainwell; three grandchildren, Samantha, Nathan and Kevin; and his brothers Jerry and Donnie. His sister, Donna, preceded him in death. The family will receive friends beginning at 10 AM Saturday at the Winkel Funeral Home in Otsego with funeral services following at 11:00 A.M., Pastor Timothy Secord officiating. Cremation will follow.

Terry L. Rowley

Terry L. Rowley of Otsego, MI, died unexpectedly Tuesday, October 16, 2007, at his home. Terry was born May 3, 1946 in Kalamazoo to Martin and Mary (Bowman) Rowley and was a lifelong resident of the area. He was a graduate of Kalamazoo Central High School and a Vietnam Veteran, having served in the U.S. Navy. For 33 years he was employed with Parker-Hannifin Corp. in Otsego. Terry was a passionate reader of books and especially enjoyed his cats. On October 6, 1973 he married the former Barbara Boyer, who preceded him in death in 2006. Surviving are four brothers and a sister, G. Martin Rowley of Dallas, TX, David (Stella) Rowley of Kalamazoo, Thomas (Dorothy) Rowley of Cheboygan, William Curry of Kalamazoo and Mary Curry of Portage; many nieces and nephews, including a special niece, Debra Winn of Otsego. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 P.M. Friday at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego, where services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, Pastor Dave Alderman officiating. Military Honors will be conducted by V.F.W. Post #3030. Cremation will follow. Contributions in memory of Terry may be made to the Plainwell Assembly of God Church or the 12th Street Baptist Church.

Lawrence L. Livingston

Lawrence ‘Larry’ Livingston of Trowbridge Twp. passed away Monday, October 16, 2007. Larry was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Navy. He was employed for over 38 years with Menasha Corp. in Otsego. On August 16, 1957 in Otsego he married Phyllis Norene Lanphear and she preceded him in death in 1982. Surviving are 7 children, Clarence ‘Sam’ (Kitty) Livingston of Allegan, Donna Kay Johnson of Otsego, John (Kolleen) Livingston of Holland, Lorna (Rex) Burkhead of Allegan, Andrew Livingston of Allegan, Janet (Todd) Allen of Otsego, Norma Freeman of Paris, MI; 12 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren; 2 sisters and 1 brother, Wilma Slesdet, Beverly Wood and Steve Livingston; several nieces and nephews. Friends may meet the family from 2-4 and 6-8 Thursday at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego, where services will be held Friday at 2:00 P.M., Pastor Gail Pike officiating. Interment in MalloryCemetery.

Lawrence W. Lesman, Jr.

Lawrence W. Lesman, Jr. of Martin, Michigan, passed away at Borgess Medical Center early Sunday morning, October 14, 2007 after a long battle with cardiovascular problems. Larry was born in Kalamazoo, Michigan, to Lawrence and Jean (Janes) Lesman on November 12, 1944. He was a mechanic by trade, having been employed with Engle Volkswagen of Kalamazoo, Lake Tire and Hiscock’s of Allegan, and Farnsworth Chevrolet, now known as Midway Chevrolet of Plainwell. Surviving are his mother, Jean Lesman; his sister, Norma (James) Speakman; two former wives, Elsia Ketchum and Marcia Lesman; five children, Karen Lesman, Joseph (Rhonda) Lesman, William (Tamara) Lesman, John (Kristen Lennox) Lesman) Nicole (Raymond Hopper) Ridge; ten grandchildren, Corey Lesman, Lynne Oetman, A. J. Oetman, Joseph Lesman Jr., Heather (Gabriel) Lesman, Jamie Lesman, Aaron Lesman, Taylor Lesman, Nico Ridge and Lindsey Hopper; two great-grandchildren, Meghan Lesman and Zoey Lesman; many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, great great nieces and nephews, who all love and miss him very much. He was preceded in death by his father, Lawrence William Lesman, Sr., in 1991, his sister, Shirley Ann White in 1984, and his granddaughter, Paiton Gabriel. The family will receive friends beginning at 11am Friday with services following at 12 noon at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego, Pastor Lester Warner officiating. Cremation will follow. Contributions in his memory will be used for funeral expenses.

Doris M. Moran

Doris M. Moran of Otsego, Michigan, passed away Wednesday, October 10, 2007, at Life Care Center of Plainwell. Mrs. Moran was born May 23, 1924, in Otsego to Frank and Nora (Aurand) Holmes and was a lifelong resident of the area. Doris was a devoted homemaker and especially enjoyed her dogs. On September 26, 1946 in Otsego she married Calvin Moran, who survives. Also surviving are two brothers, Merle (Luella) Holmes of Otsego and Roy (Mable) Holmes of Allegan; a sister-in-law, Mable Holmes of Otsego; several nieces and nephews. Doris was preceded in death by her brother, Earl Holmes. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 P.M. Friday at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego, where services will be held Saturday at 11:00 A.M., Crista Simmons officiating. Burial will follow at Mountain Home Cemetery, Otsego. Contributions in memory of Doris may be made to the American Heart Association.
